leemond2008
My neighbours are massive gamblers always betting on the horses, they both do pretty well on it, from what I gather you have to spread your bets sensibly on races throughout the day so you can normally break even (pick some favourites and some outsiders) Horse racing is something you really have to study though, you have to know the horses and what type of ground they run on etc, listening the them in the pub is like listening to someone speak a foreign language, I don't think it's something that someone can tell you how to do I think you have to practice and learn it. Me I stay well away from the horses, it confuses me, I do have the odd bet on the football though
chrisp65
I have beaten the bookmaker. I went to Chepstow races about 10 years ago and used a quite complex betting formula I'd devised myself. Bet on horses with claret and blue colours, if there are none, bet on horses with a chevron shirt that looks like a large V on the jockey. If there is no claret n blue and no chevron, don't bet. Nobody was more surprised than me when I finished the day about £40 up. Two years later, back at Chepstow, same system and I finished the day £5 up I've never bet before or since, I'm staying in profit. oh, one more tip: bingo halls, where somebody has been playing a machine for a while and they think its due a pay out but they need a wizz or a bacon roll they put a laminated card on the machine reserving it. Those are the machines to play.
Dr_Pangloss
Hedge betting is always the smartest way to bet, that and knowing your sport well enough to know when the casino miss-prices the odds of an outcome.
KennyPowers
Serious answer: Develop an in-depth knowledge of a sport (preferably a minority sport). Be smart and disciplined. Have a staking plan and stick to it. Develop an understanding of probability and randomness in sport. Follow trends closely, develop your own systems and rankings. Follow line movements closely and the reasons behind moves so you can anticipate them. Even more serious answer: Never back the Cleveland Browns. coda
I know two people who worked in the industry and gave it up to make their fortune on Betfair. It didn't work out for either of them.

It didn't work out for either of them. yeah, on a serious note I too know a group of three people that thought they knew they were tastey, pooled all their money to create a betting pot of around £40k with the idea of making it their livelihood. Didn't work out.

Shillzz
If you have enough time, then you can work free bets to your advantage. You'll need to work out the odds in order to put you in a no loss situation, and spread the bets across several different sites, but it can be done. You'll soon run out of free bet opportunities though, and I'm not sure how legal it is.
KennyPowers
I know two people who worked in the industry and gave it up to make their fortune on Betfair. It didn't work out for either of them. Without inside knowledge it's next to impossible. I could believe someone could do it on horse racing because it's so corrupt but I have a hard time believing anyone could do it on another sport. tonyh29
I bet on the stockmarket ... if you win you cash out ..if you lose you just hold onto the shares and hope they rebound ..but take a dividend in the mean time it may lack the buzz of watching your horse come over the line first but the returns can be very rewarding when you get it right ... A niche sport, preferably one with a lot of casual fans who can sway the odds massively (the wrong way hopefully). Then all you need to do is pick your moments carefully and be careful. Danwichmann
I've known people who swear they know fellas who live by gambling and a good whack at that, can anyone give me top tips on 'how to beat the bookmaker' Having worked in a bookies for a while, I did meet people that did this. Most of them had bankruptcies at some point in their lives. Anyone that was regularly making a profit of more than 5% had their bets restricted and would have to find new bookies, until they too caught up with them (people would travel 100 miles each way every day to go to a new betting shop where they weren't known.) They all claimed some system, special knowledge or whatever, but very very few people genuinely stay ahead of the bookies long term. Of course things will be slightly different online, but I've no doubt at all that the same monitoring and restrictions come into place to protect bookies profits where needed. The only way to beat the bookie is to get lucky with one big win, take it, walk away and never bet again.
Popular Post The_Rev
Tell everybody you know about the times you win. Keep the times you lose to yourself. You won't actually beat the bookmaker, but at least gullible people will think you have.
