McTominay is the 4th biggest sale United have ever done, that’s pretty astonishing

1️⃣Cristiano Ronaldo: £80 million
2️⃣Romelu Lukaku: £73 million
3️⃣Angel di Maria: £44 million
4️⃣Scott McTominay: £25.4 million

Surely they didn't sell Van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid for about 20m?! He was only about 29 when he left them and had an incredible scoring record. Also Jaap Stam going to Lazio, they'll be others higher than McTominay. Beckham aswell.

Beckham was just below £25m

Wiki says RvM to Real Madrid was €14m, and JS to Lazio was about £16.5m.

Stam and Beckham were both rushed through because SAF wanted them immediately gone. They could have got significantly more if they’d taken some time.

What's much more astonishing is that they got £73m for Lukaku.

These all happened before football went a bit mental

When Van Nistelrooy went to real madrid the transfer record was "only" 40 something million. Was probably in the 30s when Beckham went.

25m for Beckham at the time would have been a very big fee.

Beckham was 2003 I guess but even so under 25m back then when guys like Figo, Ronaldo and Zidane were moving to Real Madrid for 40-50m seems very undervalued especially given all the merchandise he'd rake in.

I don't believe RVN for 10m. Considering he went to Real Madrid and then scored 25 goals in 37 games as they won the league that must be one of the bargains of all time between top clubs.

Guess Man. United are still stuck in the Fergie era a bit where if you gave 5-6 good years of service and won plenty of trophies they'd pretty much let you go on a free or low fee.

IIRC the Real Madrid chairman at the couldn’t believe he was offered Beckham for £25m. There was a quote where he said they made something like 10x that from shirt sales alone the moment it was announced.

Shows the level of scrutiny when you're still winning leagues and going deep in CL dosen't it?

Man. United were doing that so hardly any scrutiny on their transfers in and out under SAF. Now they're struggling to even finish 5th in the league and so it fills the papers most days.

Same for Chelsea as they were signing endless players to loan out in the Abramovich era.

Yeah but it set them backwards from a footballing perspective by having to accommodate him and selling Makelele.

They probably need to sell Figo instead as he was starting to decline at top level but he was basically the reason Perez got the presidency so stayed a few more seasons.

Figo was still better than Beckham at that stage

They will miss Mctominay

I know they are getting stick for the Ugarte transfer but he will be a better workhorse. But it also means they have to drop Casemiro which they might not do considering his wages and transfer fee.

Well and also there was no PSR so it just kind of didn't matter that much if you eked every last penny of value out of the transfer.

Fergie had enough of Beckham and basically booted him out the club. Same with Van Nistelrooy when he threw his toys out the pram at being left out the carling cup final?

RVN is probably the best striker I've seen in the PL for pure goals, power and ruthless but United weren't actually a great side with him In it. I remember at the time the opinion was Ronaldo was developing and Ruud really was a fading force physically. It blew everyone's minds when he went to RM and pissed all over the league.

But yeah if that's today they ain't being letting go cheaply. Fergie ran that place like his own personal corner shop. If he wanted you gone. You were done. Plus United had such a hold in terms of finance at the time they could write off a good chunk of potentual profit on sales. It really didn't matter.

I have huge respect for what Fergie did, it sent a message what the level was. No way in a million years would he have Rashford performing as he is. He’d demand the club move him on. Whilst it would look like a bad deal on paper financially they would be getting 100% out of everyone else so it pays for itself.

That’s what SAF did with Beckham, Stam and RVN. When you’re done you’re gone regardless of what you’ve done in the past. Everyone knows you don’t piss about, and look at his results. It still blows my mind how mediocre some of his high performing teams were at player level.
