Genie
Hmmm, can't see this being popular... Every household in the UK is to have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they choose to receive it, David Cameron is to announce. In addition, Mr Cameron will say possessing online pornography depicting rape will be illegal, bringing England and Wales in line with Scotland. In a speech, the prime minister will warn that access to online pornography is "corroding childhood". The new measures will apply to both existing and new customers. Mr Cameron is also calling for some "horrific" internet search terms to be "blacklisted", meaning they will automatically bring up no results on websites such as Google or Bing. But he told BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour programme he expected a "row" with service providers, who argued that, as a matter of "freedom of speech", customers should be able to type in any words they wanted. 'Innocence' In his speech, Mr Cameron will say family-friendly filters will be automatically selected for all new customers - though they can choose to switch them off. And millions of existing computer users will be contacted by their internet providers and told they must decide whether to activate "family friendly filters" to restrict adult material. Customers who do not click on either option - accepting or declining - will have filters activated by default, Tory MP Claire Perry, Mr Cameron's adviser on the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood, told the BBC. snowychap
I thought about trying to explain just why I think this is an example of the worrying stupidity at the heart of most political policy but I shall just repeat my post in the ConDem thread instead: "One click to protect your whole home and keep your children safe." What a (stupid) dickhead you are, Dave.

nick76
All a little boring, when we were kids we pinched our dads dirty mags and vids, nowadays kids know or crack filter passwords that parents tried and hide, future kids will find other ways..... Don't care either way as I don't have kids it just seems pointless. Good parents is what is needed not government intervention, just like good parenting needed to make kids behave better, do less crime, take less drugs blah blah....it won't solve all problems with kids but government should concentrate on real issues.... Mantis
For once I'm with most of VT on this. Absolutely ridiculous idea and completely misses the point. It's pathetic how they try and link legal consenting pornography with child murderers. Child pornography is rightly illegal but this isn't even about that it seems. I think it's the principle of the whole idea that pisses me off the most. Edited July 22, 2013 by Mantis
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
It's more about laying the groundwork & systems in place for further censorship than it is about taking a moral stance on pornography, in my opinion.

Disagree. There's no grand conspiracy involved, it's just Cameron trying to win over the "please think of the children" crowd.
Davkaus
You'd think after the Pirate Bay was blocked and saw huge spikes in visitors that they'd realise this is ineffective. As with everything a politician says and does, it's about looking like they're doing something useful even when they're accomplishing **** all. The_Rev
Will Cameron do this before or after he finds a replacement for GCSE exams, introduces plain cigarette packaging, puts a tax on pasties and introduces a minimum price for alcohol?

chrisp65
Yep, it's a populist move, doomed to failure but bound to get the short term votes of idiots who don't know any better. He's on a short term winner. The two scenarios are that a: he tries and fails but will continue to battle big business on our behalf and god bless you Dave for thinking of the little children. or scenario b: he actually thinks he manages to get something done, and all those blue rinses will be happy right up until the day the Mail front page announces that unbelievably, it turns out you can get around the ban. Either way, we'll be the other side of the election before its rumbled.
StefanAVFC Posted July 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Call me stupid, but won't this just push child pornography further and further underground? Making the problem worse? Edited July 22, 2013 by StefanAVFC
