Things that piss you off that shouldn't

Not sure if sexism is that big a problem. The way I look at it there’s male orientated stuff and female stuff. You get crossovers as seen in football where it’s seems womens football is being rammed down our throats. I find it a bit OTT . My favoured sport horse racing has female guests and jockeys which I find far less annoying in its attempt to showcase women in horse racing. Plenty of women on building sites which is fine. We’ve come a long way after all.  Women have never had it so good imo, and rightly so. If  a woman is good enough to run a building site great. If a black man is qualified to and the best candidate for a tv show great. It’s the box ticking which annoys me. Saying that my missus thinks I’m a sexist pig but I don’t know. My son plays the for school netball team, and I haven’t made a comment on that, apart from congratulating him, so can’t be that bad.

To me, and to very greatly over simplify, equality of opportunity should be afforded to everyone. This should go without saying. Harassing and abusing people because you don't agree with that makes you a jerk. More should be done, by everybody, to make it happen.

Speak to a woman of my generation, and they'll tell you that the progress made in the 60s and 70s has been largely reversed.

I actually agree with this one - or at least the 'guilty' part. We should acknowledge what went on, educate ourselves about it, and stop 'celebrating' slavers. But guilty? No. We are not defined by what people from our country did in the past - good or bad. The generations now living did not enslave Africans, nor did we defeat the Nazis. No pride, and no shame for what our ancestors did, they were not us.

And at the risk of opening a can of worms… I would guess that most of our direct ancestors weren’t actually involved. More likely to have been peasants, smallholders and urban poor who never left the island - as that was the vast majority of the population.

I know of course virtually all Western / Northern Europeans still benefited economically from colonialism in one way or another, so maybe it’s a moot point. But just something I find intriguing when people say “your ancestors enslaved my ancestors” as if Britain is one big happy family (this thread alone disproves that 🤣).

Edit: I think too often the debate is imported wholesale from the United States, where the context was completely different. They equate White Anglo Saxon Americans with White Europeans, but there’s a few centuries of divergence there.

Really ? That surprises me a lot . I feel there’s a lot more opportunities for women these days. One thing I will say about “these days” is the sexual exploitation of not just women but humans in general

I wonder how much porn and online pickup artist / alpha male culture has reversed things a bit. Are kids growing up thinking it’s normal to do some really aggressive, weird stuff to women? Maybe it’s just a moral panic, I dunno. A lot of people say kids nowadays are nicer and less violent, so perhaps we just forget…

Why do they think that is? Was there a trigger point for it?

Yes and yet another thing we have to thank the internet for I would say.

Sex , it’s everywhere isn’t it . So much easier nowadays for people to view porn and think that’s normal sex. From a sexual  point of view we’ve definitely gone backwards . There seems no morals now which I weren’t complaining about a few years ago. I just think as a whole there’s never been more opportunities for women and more rights.

Does anyone watch porn ?  I still do, but I can go weeks without watching it.  Everyone at work always has one video or another to show you. So many group chat things where adult content gets passed about .

You right. No pun intended buts it not just a black and white issue, slavery. Many shades of grey.

I agree with Mike, learn the lessons, make sure it never happens again* and move on.

*although people seem to have no issue buying goods today made by slave/child labour.

I’ve been posting here for nearly 19 years now , I’ve disagreed with people on here many a time , I can hardly be accused of being silent .. my warnings record backs this up :)

For sure   “the few “ as you call them , are a bit woolly and a bit northern but here’s the thing you need to ask yourself , perhaps they are right … i mean they’ll  never agree that Thatcher is the greatest Prime Minister since Churchill , but when it comes to the topics  you seem to want to discuss  , frankly it’s hard to disagree with them .. maybe it’s not fear that stops people agreeing with you , just simply that no one does agree with you

Or maybe it's because you few are blocked already. 😂

Your last point is a very valid point . Slavery will always exist whatever the colour of skin .

Slavery abolished when? First half of the 19th Century?

The vast majority of our relatives and ancestors back then would have been reliant on the local landed gentry for work. Some would have been moving to industrialised areas and risking their short lives in industries of the wealthy. Next to no rights, no vote, unlikely to have had the education and the means to even know or comprehend what was happening in Antigua or Gambia. Too busy getting the kids fed and not being coshed by the militia.

Doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t have been very suspicious of anyone from beyond walking distance. Doesn’t mean that I haven’t had some trickle down benefit.

But apologise? No, I think that would be to build a false history where I am dragged in to the wrong doing of bad people from 200 years ago. If we’re going down that road where does that end?

Having said all that, I’m no silent right winger, I think the Colston statue should have stayed at the bottom of the dock.
