mjmooney Posted March 30, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 30, 2013 Convertables, full stop. Impractical in so many ways in the UK. Even somewhere hot and sunny, I'd end up putting the roof up to stop me from burning and get the air-con on. They are great for the 'look at me!' brigade though. What I was about to post, virtually word for word!
Jimzk5
I've never seen the point of them, how much difference can it make driving without a roof. I'm gping to throw personalized number plates in here too, what's the point
mjmooney Posted March 30, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 30, 2013 I've said before - if somebody gave me MJM 1 or some such as a present I would immediately sell it. I'd be embarrassed to drive around with one, feeling like a clearing in the woods.
choffer Posted March 30, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 30, 2013 Brother-in-law has an impreza with SCOGBIE number plate. As if the first thing didn't make him look an idiot, I can't for the life of me work out what the plate is about. He tried to explain that the nickname for subaru was scoobie but even that made him look a bit sadder. If the number plate is supposed to refer to something, you're going to look like a loser. If it isn't spelt even remotely correctly you look even worse.

The real doozies are the ones where they have to fit rusty screws to change the shape of the letters/numbers in an attempt to spell out what they want. Which is illegal, incidentally - as is using non-approved fonts. I wish the police would bust everybody they saw who had done this. And then, when it still isn't clear what it's supposed to say, they put a "translation" in small letters underneath it. Fuxsake.
leviramsey Posted March 30, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 30, 2013 convertables with the roof down when its **** freezing, just got passed by a jag, the driver/passenger both had about 7 layers and wooly hats onhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fuijhUn0pk
TheDon
I don't understand that advert, "Now everyday is a top down day, that's the power of German engineering". That says to me that the mechanism is going to break and you'll be stuck unable to put the roof back up and have to resort to wearing ski masks in the winter to keep warm? leviramsey Posted March 30, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 30, 2013 To me, convertibles are built for temperate climates, e.g. New England. It doesn't generally get so hot in the summer that A/C is needed and they're still marginally useful for winter. Not sure that the extra weight is worth it, though. As for vanity plates, one point in favor of moving to Cow Hampshire is the seven character plates which would allow me to register ASTNVLA (which is at this writing still available). In the great and glorious Commonwealth, I'm limited to six characters, so the best one I could think of would be UPDVLA.

UP DVLA on a numberplate would actually be sort of funny, but not football related
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
The cynicism that pervades modern life. It struck me while reading up on Julian Barnes' new book. Yes, it deals with grief, inspired (if that is the right word) by the death of his wife a few years back. I see no problem with people exploring a feeling that is so intrinsic to human experience. I'm firmly of the belief that a public conversation about difficult feelings can only help those who suffer and help those who haven't understand. I'm not a fan of the old world reticence, that stiff upper lip, keep your problems behind close doors business. So I'm a bit disturbed by those who look at Barnes' book and call it grief porn and such nonsense. As if he is exploiting personal feelings for monetary gain. Undoubtedly there are those who do write shit like that (hello, Nicholas Sparks), but must we look at everything so cynically? Can't we just sit back and take something as it is? It seems to me that sincerity has gone out of fashion and is treated with something bordering on contempt.

Phumfeinz
When somebody asks you a question, you reply, and they repeat what you just said expecting you to reply yet again to confirm what you just told them. 'What time are you leaving?' '11' '11?' Urgh.
mjmooney Posted March 31, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 31, 2013 On a related note, films and TV dramas where you only hear one end of a telephone call, but the character repeats everything, so that we get the message: "DCI Plodsworth speaking. What? The suspect has been caught? In the conservatory? With the revolver? He's confessed, you say? You're bringing him in? OK, got that". In reality, what you would hear would be: "Yes? OK. Good work". I know they have to impart information, but there is always a less clunky way of doing it. Lazy writing.
