tonyh29
Those countries are usually being run by crooks. When i was in Djibouti the other year i was chatting in the bar of the hotel to a couple of Americans who had come in on a huge cargo ship full of grain for Ethiopia courtesy of the UN first off before the boat is allowed to dock they have to give the Djiboutian's their cut .. a few tonnes of grain then it's all loaded up on lorries and driven to Ethiopia , where it is promptly processed with a cut going to some Ethiopian officials before it's turned around and driven back to Djibouti loaded back on the same cargo ship and sold to another country That the drugs vans get police escorts on the road and the food ones don't probably tells you all you need to know I was in Ethiopia in 85 around the time the live aid planes were landing .. place had fat warlords driving around in expensive cars wearing expensive clothing ,those particular people certainly weren't starving whilst millions of their countrymen were , my understanding was the warlords had to be brought off in order to allow the aid through At the risk of sounding heartless it's why I rather donate money to saving the Whales or Tigers than giving it to save humans

As for your last remark.I get $20 deducted from my/our bank account every month and donated to Perth Cat Haven.Have been doing that for the last 5 years and will continue doing that for the forseeable future. Actually the cats do get the money.I have seen them sailing around in Catamarangs, watching Cat Balou movies and running around on Hot Tin Roofs. I think the salient point is that aid, whoever it be for, rarely if ever 'solves' the problem, but is there to help/alleviate. Obviously, its efficacy varies, depending on where the aid is going to. But I for 1 did not think that 'Sir Bob' was going to solve the problem of 3rd world poverty and starvation by a song and a concert.
snowychap
At the risk of sounding heartless it's why I rather donate money to saving the Whales or Tigers than giving it to save humans Were you donating money that may have been siphoned off before speaking to a couple of people in a bar in Djibouti? BOF Posted July 26, 2012 Moderator Share Posted July 26, 2012 Also reminds me of a common misconception. The misconception that Ethiopia has any coastline.

I gave money to Live Aid etc as did vast amounts of people , it was the visit to Ethiopia in 85 that opened my eyes to where a lot of that money was going and made me change my mind PS I see what you are trying to suggest but they weren't a "couple of people in a bar" they were senior crew members of a UN sponsored cargo ship who had been stuck in port for 4 weeks unable to depart and had lost faith in what they were doing ... LockStockVilla
So I am working on a research project which requires me to email a ton of consultants from all these different countries, and for some odd reason, when ever I email them, those who do reply (typically Europeans such as French, Swedish, German, etc.) include various forms of smiley faces in their emails. I would say they are fairly professional emails as well so it sort of baffles me and I find it quite creepy as well. I really do not like smiley faces in emails.
