Can't.....help......myself. Sorry Moonman: Quote Home in means to direct on a target. The phrasal verb derives from the 19th-century use of homing pigeons, but it resurged in the 20th century to refer to missiles that home in on their targets. It’s also commonly used metaphorically, where to home in on something is to focus on and make progress toward it. Hone in began as an alteration of home in, and many people regard it as an error. It is a very common, though, especially in the U.S. and Canada—so common that many dictionaries now list it—and there are arguments in its favor. Hone means to sharpen or to perfect, and we can think of homing in as a sharpening of focus or a perfecting of one’s trajectory toward a target. So while it might not make strict logical sense, extending hone this way is not a huge leap. Outside North America, home in prevails by a huge margin. It also prevails in North America, but only by a ratio of about two to one. Hone in is common even in technical, scientific, and military contexts, where one might expect home in to prevail. A few American and Canadian publishers clearly favor home in as a matter of policy, but most apparently have no strictly enforced policy one way or the other. Paddywhack
Maybe @Rob182 meant that his ears keep firing missiles at sniffers on trains, much to his annoyance. In which case 'honing' would definitely be correct, regardless. 1

Just blow your nose you buffoons. I find that my ears hone directly into people sniffing on the train, much to my annoyance. I hate people who blow their nose loudly, it's disgusting. 1

My Grandad was called Louis Arthur, and if we had a boy last year we were going to use his name in memory of him, although Arthur Louis as my Mrs is called Louise. So I imagine should we have another baby it would have been top of the list for a boy again, maybe not now. Would you have pronounced your son the French way ("Louwee") or the other way ("Lewis") ? As far as the royals go I believe it would be the former, prob in some reference to Louis Mountbatten. I dunno; it might be an influence on your choice or not....but I reckon it shouldn't affect you..... I mean they're solid names and it's not as if you were gonna use Beyoncé or Beckham as a forename

Great idea, get away from your desk for a bit, stick a quid in and play something like Giant Jenga or Fifa on PS4. My work buddy went in and said me and him would be there in a sec to play Mario Kart. (They spelled it Cart on the email, which annoyed me, but anyway..) They said "Just the two of you?". He said "Yep". They said "No, sorry, the Mario Kart (he probably pronounced it Cart) is for 4 players, you'll have to get another two people". He said "There's no one playing right now, why can't just stick £1 in each and play two player?" "You have to pay £4 for 4 players" Without trying to be sexist or ageist, given the demographic in our office, I can't see them getting too many players playing Mario KART today. Nothing like regulated fun. I would have smashed the **** place up personally. Edited April 27, 2018 by rodders0223

When I was still working we once got an email round about some organised 'fun' - in a lunchtime, natch - that we were all encouraged to attend. I immediately fired off a 'reply all' to the effect that I would be going down the pub, specifically to avoid it, and suggesting that others do likewise. I got a lot of positive reactions from colleagues, and a lot of negative reactions from management, as expected. Job done.

mjmooney Posted April 28, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted April 28, 2018 Very tangentially related to the tits issue... the Hollywood obsession with casting impossibly glamorous women in movies. Contemporary westerns, for example, seem to be far more gritty and realistic than the ones made in the 1950s - the men have authentically huge moustaches and worn, filthy clothes - they finally look like the men in the grainy old monochrome photographs from the 1880s. But the moment a young female character walks in, you can guarantee she'll be ridiculously beautiful, immaculately coiffed and made-up, and be wearing a stylish modern version of the frontier clothes. Read any book about the old west, and look at contemporary photographs and you'll realise that it was populated by tough, downtrodden women who lived difficult lives, and whose faces and appearance reflected that fact.
