Your mates needs to stand up for himself and tell her the lay of the land. I laughed in exasperation at the phrase that she won't let him go out! Is he a man or mouse? my mates story is depressingly similar though. They met in a bar in Saigon, where we were on a lads holidays. She is a Filipino and apparently was working in Vietnam as a teacher. I had my suspicions as they met in a well known pick-up bar frequented by freelance hookers. Anyway they spent the rest of the holiday together (Thailand and Singapore - he paid for her to come along - amazing she had no problem getting time off work!). He proposed by the end of the holiday and told us on a night out in Clarke Quay, Singapore (she'd gone back to Vietnam that day) and we laughed until we realised he was serious

Anyway, back in the UK, they 'skyped' every day. She soon quit her 'job' and moved back to Manila. She demanded his email / facebook logins so she could keep an eye on him and make sure he was behaving himself. She also demanded he skyped her every night a couple of times without failure, meaning he could never have a night out as she would go crazy at him. 6 months go on and he flys out to Manila and they get married over there (all paid for by him of course). I'm not sure but I think he was sending her money as well. Then he began the process of bringing her over to the UK, which happened and then she was soon pregnant and had their daughter, thus strengthening her claims for permanent residency here. As expected the romance cooled and now they barely speak, although due to monetary constraints they still live together but he works days and she works nights. He pays for the rent, bills and nursery and is always skint.

He loves his daughter and she is the only shining light to come out of this depressing situation, which was all too easy to predict.

After living in philippines for quite a few months, i hear this story every other day. Its crazy the amount of people who just fall in love with filipinas (well i guess it would be anybody who gives them attention) and how quick they are to send money. Semi-decent looking females can make serious amounts of money. 2k$+ p/m easily. Theres this one female i know whos got a 40 y/o guy paying for all her education, to live, 800-1k£ apartment p/m and they only see each other 1 month a year max. I just dont get it at all.

Contactless is awesome.

I'm annoyed now when I find a card machine that doesn't offer it.

Actually now that you mention it.  I was amazed in America that to a great extent they still have to sign the credit card receipt rather than enter a PIN.  PIN is far from fully rolled out over there yet.  "Oh yeah, it is coming" was the response when I asked with a level of total incredulity (thinking it amazing that the little old Irishman had, in this one small way, arrived from a more advanced part of the world).

Absolutely this. In Norway (I don't know if this is common elsewhere?) your debit/credit card is valid ID and has a picture of you on the back. Not too many years ago, in New York mind, I was paying with my debit card in a store and the guy had to go get his colleague to show him this, apparently, amazing invention I had brought with me from the future. For a moment, I felt like the coolest man in the world.

When someone you know is making the biggest, and probably most expensive, mistake of their lives and they just can't see it or listen to good sensible advice

My mate getting married a couple of years ago. We all knew it wouldn't work, Result? Didn't work and now he's skint

I think a lot of us will have similar stories to tell.

Mate of mine was working in India and married (to a local) within 10 months of arriving there. First time I met her was the day before the wedding and I saw it straight away. She's taken him for a ride, spent all his money and now there's nothing left, she's telling him he has to leave and she's having the house. She's also saying he has to pay for the kids to go to boarding school as she doesn't want to look after them. She's told him she never loved him and only married him because her dad told her to. She goes out whenever she wants but won't allow him out ever. She even tried to give me the come-on too - she's that desperate to spite him.

Poor bloke knows he made a big mistake now and wishes someone had warned him off but as he was overseas, nobody could see it coming.

couldn't you take one for the team and then that would make her the adulteress and you get your nuts in as a bonus

Haha. Rest assured that 'boring' is far from being the predominant opinion of Scandinavians. That's Belgians (sorry Larscapaldi ;) )

Probably true, to be fair. Once again, in America, my introducing myself as Norwegian was once met with a 'Scandinavians, eh? Tall, blond attractive people'.

...and I am.

Photo ID is unreasonably trusted as an authenticator. The MoD do not use photo ID alone as ID. Humans are really bad at recognising a real person from a 2d image of the same person.

Ask any 17 year old with an older sibling of the same sex, or even a friend with similar hair.

Did you have your hover board?

I'd agree with photos being unreliable as an ID.

I have an older brother. Whilst there's obviously some resemblance, we don't look all that alike, at all. Since I was a child people have had trouble telling us apart in photos, despite us clearly not looking anything like each other.

Agreed. Night club security staff seem particularly lacking in said ability. We obviously also have to enter a PIN to use our debit cards.

I left my hover board in the future, sadly. Having to rely on NYC's wonderful public transportation instead, it could have turned out to be a fatal error. But that's another story entirely.

I once arrived in China, beginning a job, with all my belongings in my suitcase, and no money in the bank, and I rocked up to the immigration desk and the woman there took a look at my passport, at me, back to my passport again, and just said 'this isn't yours'. Even after about ten minutes arguing, she wasn't having it. She didn't think my driving licence was me either. Of course I was bricking it at this point. Eventually, a supervisor could be found who actually agreed it was me. Goes to show, though, it really can be hard to identify people from 2D pics.

Must be a China thing! I really struggled to get in too, I crossed the border by train from Vietnam, they were scrutinising me for about 10 minutes, looking at my face from every angle and stuff. Granted that passport photo was pretty old but I didn't like the thought of being held in China. It's not like they could put me on a flight out from where I was.

I got to the passport booth in Russia, miserable as **** woman in there, I was tapping a beat on the ledge "stop tapping now" **** hell! "Where did you get your visa from?" I didn't have a clue, the missus had arranged it all, she had to come over and say we posted my passport to Edinburgh "who's she?"

Was a right ball ache

I think they're building a new one for the World Cup but St Petersburg airport is the worst I've been to in the world (no doubt Tony's been to worse) it's a proper stereotypical soviet throw back horrible place
