mjmooney Posted August 12, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted August 12, 2013 Somebody once observed that British soaps tend to be about working-class losers, whereas US soaps are more likely to be about unfeasibly glamorous, successful people. Why is that?

It's just bands singing another band's song slowly. Occasionally (very occasionally) you get someone who actually does something different (usually an actually talented band as opposed to normal pop guff) and it's good. but most of the time it's all the same. CVByrne
I've long held the belief that soaps act as an opium for the working class. They glamourise shit, scummy lives in miserable settings with next to no social mobility and people lap it up like it's a bloody grand thing to be a miserable alcoholic with four children, one of which is a mass murderer, two are estranged and the other is a good hearted grafter with a secret drug addiction. But it's all O-****-K because they get to have a big piss up every weekend and talk in whispers and share gossip when some pouty faced business owner turns up, who inevitably turns out to be a bit of a word removed, serves them right for having the cheek to achieve anything. Boo hiss! Load of Bollocks. Never, ever watched a full episode of any soaps. Dislike all non comedy british tv shows. So the level of dislike I hold for british soaps is immeasurable. Thankfully TV is dead, I watch my shows when I feel like it not when they happen to be on TV.

chrisp65
well, I loves a bit of ska not Madness, but real, sweaty, Jamaican Ska in a hot dark club is just fine, just fine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmkkxevJMvM though it is fair to say many of the band members back in the day, the likes of The Ethiopians, were better musicians than the genre allowed. Many would record Ska for the dancehalls and sound systems and to pay the bills, then go off and play their noodling jazz together that had no commercial channel it's dance music, so it's fine by me

villa4europe
I don't mind covers, I just hate the recent style of slowing it down to a snails pace and making everything dreary that power of love cover at Christmas being a prime example, just makes the song so pointless
