useless Posted April 26 Share Posted April 26 The Cross and the Axe (Bogdan Dziworski) Elegiac documentary about Krzyżtopór Castle in the village of Ujazd, southern Poland. Built between ca. 1627 and 1644 by Krzysztof Ossoliński, it was occupied until 1770 when it was destroyed by the Russian army during the military actions against the army of the Bar Confederation. Nowadays, the castle is classified as a permanent ruin. The film is a powerful meditation on vanity and historical decline whose ghosts inhabit the ancient ruins. Modern times are really ridiculous compared to the magnificence of the destroyed fortress. Very great, visually stunning, and good soundtrack which I think is some sort folk choral thing, and sound design is good too, I didn't even know what it was about as I watching, I just knew people rave about Bogdan Dziworski documentaries as being hidden gems, and this was definitely good, some of the cinematography was like watching Tarkovsky film or something, this one about Ice Hockey from the same director also looks interesting Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Polskie Wydawnictwo Audiowizualne released it on DVD as part of a Bogdan Dziworsk collection a while back, but I think long out of print Edit: The site was VK.com, but just googled it apparently it isn't safe, it might be that it appears on youtube at some point, from what I've seen all the short Polish documentaries that Polskie Wydawnictwo Audiowizualne have put out are worth watching Edited May 19 by useless 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

rjw63 Posted May 24 Share Posted May 24 Just finished the new Beach Boys documentary streaming on Disney. Conclusions: If you're a casual fan or don't know much about them, it's a great watch. I liked it. It was OK. If you're a die-hard anorak type (like myself) then you'll be scratching your head as to why they only gave a band with 63 years of history and some horrendous lows, just one hour and 53 minutes. There wasn't one single thing in this presentation I didn't already know. The amount of stuff they left out is astonishing (like, they ended it in 1980 FFS). Didn't think I could learn much more, but interesting to hear about the American war reporter, William Shirer. They always get the strangest looking guy to play Hitler in the renactments.
