Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted May 27, 2013 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted May 27, 2013 I'm actually happy to see him go now, provided that we get a good price for him. I'm not at all convinced he'll do as well next year and, as long as the funds are re-invested, then I think our team could benefit overall from his departure. We have £30m worth of talent upfront in the form of Benteke, that's atleast comparable to the cost of the rest of the first 11 put together. We are woefully lacking quality elsewhere in the team, and I think we'd be a far more balanced team if we were to re-invest the proceeds from Benteke into a £10m Centre half, £10m Centre mid and £10m replacement upfront. I'm aware things are far from being that simple, but it atleast demonstrates my point. Selling Benteke could help us address these areas, provided that the money is re-invested wisely, which I'm quietly confident of with Lambert in charge. Football money doesn't work like that - if we get £27m for Benteke (it makes the sums simple) and take into account the £3m we won't be paying him over the next three seasons, the total benefit to the club is £30m. If we go out and buy that £10m Centre half, he's going to want £50k a week for four years - he's a £10m Centre Half - that's a total of £20m of the money gone. We could take the £10m we've got left and put Weimann on a new contract, or maybe buy a £5m player, but there wouldn't be enough to go out and get two more £10m players without a significant investment from elsewhere. I did explicitly acknowledge that the world of football isn't quite that simple. I was just trying to demonstrate how re-investing the money from the potential sale of Benteke could (and I stress could) benefit our club in the long term if the right replacements were brought in. To counter your arguement, I'd say that the wage bill itself will have extra room for manoeuvre due to the departure of several highly paid players, and beyond that, I don't think Lambert is in the business of paying any individual £50k a week to join the club. Shillz, I'm not having a go, it's just a longstanding bugbear of mine that when we sell a player, unless the exact sum is invested in transfer fees there's always a clamour to shout about the club not reinvesting the money. I'm just making the point that transfer fees are increasingly not the big picture. On Lambert not wanting to spend £50k a week on a player, I really hope he is, otherwise we're in trouble. The very best players in this league are after £200k a week - we're not in that market - the proven quality is after £100k a week - we're not in that market either - good, solid Premier league players, the Shawcross's, Piennar's, Jelavic's, Nobles and Agbonlahor's of this world want £50k a week - if we're not in that market, then we're not in great shape. £20k a week gets you kids and players who aren't good enough for the Premier league - and if those kids are any good then it gets you them for about a year before they want more money. The days of Premier league starters on £20k a week are gone.
VillaChris
Bent will still leave, he won't be doing with another season of bench warming and the odd start in the cup. Hopefully Benteke will stay, I reckon he will and will leave after the world cup but as we've seen recently with our star attacking players there is no guarantee. We'd have Gabby, Weimann (I reckon that new contract will be signed shortly) and I can see Lambert going for a lower league punt like Dwight Gayle to replace Bent and he'd sign a more established striker to replace Benteke if the worst happens. Texas_Mike
Every day I check this thread hoping to see we signed him on higher wages and he will stay. You'll have plenty of checking to do then. Not only is he away with Belgium he will off on his hols after that. Let's face it, he and his agent are simply going to wait and see what happens. They will not be rushing in a new contract until they know who is or isn't interested. If he signs a new contract it will be July at the earliest and if someone bigger is sniffing around longer. I still expect this to get messy with some crappy offer from someone like Arsenal coming in that we reject but Benteke wants to push through. Hope I am wrong....... Pretty sure I heard that Lewandowski was among their highest earners as he is on €20k per week.

Outside of psg and Monaco wages are still lower than here
Spoony
It's 45% in th UK as the top tax bracket. Pretty sure France is higher. And Monaco is tax free I believe
PaulC
Yes was 50p, at least it means football is generating a lot of taxes for this Country, so not all bad.

I'd imagine the number of top footballers actually paying the going rate to be very low.

rodigan
i think its 50:50 whether he stays another season, and beyond next year, no chance.... if he has a stormer next season, we'll get proper money for him.... at the moment, i don't think we will - i can see offers coming in around 12 - 15m.... if they come from a club that he wants to go to, then we potentially have a real problem on our hands, as we could see a genk-style strike happening.... my concern is that suitor clubs structure a package with emphasis on paying him and his agent, and not paying the villa.... that would test the true extent of player power... would love him to stay, by the way, i think he's great for the club and would love to have him terrorising defences for us for years to come...

There's no suggestion he would strike after 1 year, but if I was manager, I'd let him strike, for a whole year if necessary. We don't have to sell. World Cup year, all he'd do is lose his place to Lukaku. We are in the strong position, we need the strong leadership from Lambert and Faulkner.
legov
I'm guessing he thinks Benteke will strike again, or do something similar. If the article was translated properly, and is to be believe, that probably won't happen.
