Just had this conversation with Microsoft.  Pretty sure im going to be getting a PS4 now even more so.

Kay: Sorry for the long wait.

Kay: As I checked, your 12 month subscription auto renewed on 4/19/2013 for 39.99

Kay: The balance must be paid off in order to redeem the code, Kristoffa.

Kristoffa: Why, i dont want to renew the 12 month subscription and thought the expiry of my previous payment method would be enough to ensure my subscription wasnt renewed.

Kay: When you don't turn off the auto renewal, the subscription would automatically renew the next year.

Kay: Your card under your account kept declining the balance that's why your account got suspended.

Kristoffa: Yes, and now i want to renew a 3 month subscription which i have paid for rather than the 12 month

Kay: I understand. You see, Kristoffa, since the 12 month auto renewed on 4/19/2013 and your card declined the payment, you will need to settle the balance first in order to redeem the code.

Kristoffa: and if i dont settle the balance?

Kay: If the balance is not settled, the account will be locked and you will not be able to redeem the code/

Kay: Or use your account.

Kristoffa: So because of some BS setting that i didnt disable, my account is now permanently locked out unless i cough up what is essentially a penalty charge?

Kay: I feel you, Kristoffa. But as much as I want to lift off the suspension, our system won't allow me. The process won't go through.

Kristoffa: So essentially what you are saying is that Microsoft's Policy in this instance is that unless i cough up the £39.99 i can no longer have access to my account and services that i have paid for and been a long standing customer of since the console launched?

Kay: Once you pay off the balance, the suspension will be lifted off and you can continue redeeming the code and play on Xbox. However, if you don't pay off the balance, your account will be locked you cannot get access to it or redeem a code unless it is paid off, Kristoffa.

Kristoffa: So its a case of pay the balance or we cut you off then?

Kay: We can only lift off the suspension once the balance is paid off.

Kay: I have not heard from you for a while. Do you still need assistance?

Kristoffa: Ok, so the fact that i have been a customer since launch means nothing then? Because it is past a certain date and i didnt have my auto-renewal set to off, i essentially have to pay for something i dont want rather than use something else i have forked out my hard earned cash for?

Kay: I understand, Kristofffa, however, even if the I process the balance, the system won't go through. If it's only possible, I will do it for you in a heartbeat. I do hope you understand.

Kristoffa: Yes i understand your willingness to help me out and i appreciate that! However, the information you are passing on to me suggests that Microsoft now feel they are entitled to some of my hard earned money because of a setting on my xbox live account and failure to pay this fine essentially means i cannot use my console online again!!!

Kristoffa: Well thats not a future im signing up for! Ive been a long standing memeber of the xbox community since launch and this is how i get treated! I dont like the precedent that is being set here

Kristoffa: And for that reason im out.

Kristoffa: I will be selling my 360 and trading it for a PS3 soon and when the next generation arrives i certainly will not be investing my hard earned money into Microsoft.

Kay: I understand.

Kay: Here's what I will do.

Kay: I will try to process the balance on my end.

Kay: Just a head up, I might be able to lift off the balance but this is temporary. This way, you can redeem the code and get back to gaming.

Kay: I will do my best to process it on my end.

Kay: This may take some time though.

I don't see your problem? You got it sorted, did you not? I can see the problem with the auto renew, but if you turned it off it wouldn't have been a problem. Alot of companies have stupid rules, but you got them to help you around it.

You dont see a problem with the initial line being pay us or we cut you off?  I realise the problem was partly my own fault, but the insistance that nothing could be done unless i paid only for something to be done when i threatened to leave is a farce.

Villarule - for what it's worth, I don't actually mind the Kinect thing either. I highly doubt it's going to be spying on you like some seem to suggest. I just have a problem with it being a necessity for the Xbox to work, as the Kinect is probably the thing that is making the Xbox more expensive. I'd rather just ditch the kinect and buy the console for £350.

Have you read about PRISM over the past few weeks? Did you see who the first commercial participant was?

To be fair I haven't. But the idea of people watching me through a Kinect whilst im play Fifa on my own in my flat seems a bit silly to me. It would be a complete waste of time. I have nothing to hide. However, I understand about the principle of it all and they shouldn't be doing it. But I really dont think they would.

First of all, i'd like to apologise for all my typos in my previous comment. I've had a few to drink and was typing on my phone so it's very poorly written.

 

Secondly, i'll have a read tomorrow. Sounds interesting if they are actually spying on people through the internet. :)

That's what pissed kkr off though (I think). She said nothing could be done, even if she wanted to help, in order to try and get him to pay up. When kkr threatened that they wouldn't get this money, or any money in the future, she magically made it work. If it didn't work and that's that, fine, but don't BS your customer.

I think it's standard procedure by most companies to try get money out of you first. I think what worked in krr's case is that he had a 3 month trial that he had just spent money on.

Another version of that chart from a couple of pages back.  They removed the Xbox Live Gold claim from the chart, which is entirely justified as far as I am concerned because it was a selling point of the 360, not the Xbox One.

No. But I consciously don't post much personal stuff on Facebook and I like my phone.

My objection to The Xbox is that it requires Kinect to always be on. I don't want a live camera and microphone constantly connected to the internet in my house, especially given Microsoft's requirement that they are always on and the companies very enthusiastic stance over PRISM and of course, Facebook, web browser stuff and my phone all only potentially monitor what I do whereas Kinect will be monitoring my entire family.
