Guest
We should give the manager and coaching staff a chance to work on him, like they have done with Delph.
JAMAICAN-VILLAN
He was awful today but how can people write him off already. Bloody stupid. We are Villa fans, that's what we do.
Davkaus
that that was the worst debut I can remember seeing in a Villa shirt. It wasn't as bad as Ehiogu's. Also against Norwich. I sense a conspiracy!
VillaGoMarching
Very poor IMO, rash with his decision making. Honestly we've seen Albrighton do better.

Cliffy Biro
I think we all are but that doesnt mean hes exempt from being criticised when he has a shocker and shoots 15 times per game.
Isa
Indeed. To clarify, criticising a new signing's performance doesn't equate to writing him off.
Rovers13
Indeed. To clarify, criticising a new signing's performance doesn't equate to writing him off. Its more about the people that are saying he'll never amount to anything
VillaGoMarching
I truely hope he comes good, but my point is currently I don't think he offers anymore than Albrighton. He looked quite the liability infact.
Jimzk5
So with a midfield that has 1 goal in 90 odd appearances were screaming for a midfielder that is happy to have a crack at goal, we sign one and destroy him after 70 minutes into his full debut because he didn't score with one of his 7 shots. villa-revolution
I reckon Lambert asked Tonev to see if he could hit Delia Smith straight in the mush just for old times sake What other possible explanation could there be for such piss poor shooting? Folski
I don't think anyone's writing him off just highlighting how bad he was, showed glimpses v Malaga needs time.
briny_ear
Notice he made MOTD2 in the 2 Good/2 Bad slot. (He was Bad in case you're wondering). To balance that, Brad G was one of the Goods Edited September 22, 2013 by briny_ear
KjParton
Christ MOTD 2 taking the piss out of his shot and Shelvey's free kick :'( - they were both horrific!
EssexVilla
So with a midfield that has 1 goal in 90 odd appearances were screaming for a midfielder that is happy to have a crack at goal, we sign one and destroy him after 70 minutes into his full debut because he didn't score with one of his 7 shots. It isn't black or white. We need more goals from our midfield to move up the table but the midfield taking shots at every opportunity isn't the answer. The odd shot from distance if the opportunity arises is good. The sole objective of shooting every time you get the ball in an advanced position is bad as it pisses away possession when there is a chance to create a better opportunity. In my opinion Tonev has potential but judging from the little I've seen of him he needs to improve his decision-making. However, he seems reasonably proficient technically, has the pace to create a half yard and tracks back defensively. Definitely a project for Lambert and his staff to work on. Especially as some of his decisions to shoot may be a result of the pressure to impress early on in a big step up in his career.

ciggiesnbeer
I just rewatched the game. All the negatives are true BUT he had a nice little spell at the start of the second half in terms of tackles and trying to get a counter going. I watched him whenever he was on camera he really put in a shift work rate wise, he also has some very good pace. For those of us looking for positives, some hope there. PaulC
He has got ability, no question. He just needs to calm down and think a bit more. If can be more selective in his shooting and stop shooting on sight and look to pass the ball more then he will be an asset.
