MakemineVanilla
The 'cost' argument is a load of shite. The prison population is around 90k, which is roughly SodAll% of the actual population (stats from England). The overall cost is minimal in the grand scheme of things. This is ignoring the counter-argument of cost of appeals and the cost of having them in prison until they're killed etc. If people want kangaroo courts and a swift hanging then go and live in North Korea. Whether it is because we are as unenlightened as we seem or for reasons to do with inequality, we certainly love to jail people in this country. While the UK has 147 people in jail for every 100k of population, countries like Germany (80), Denmark (68) and Sweden (67), manage to jail a lot less. In that land of freedom called the USA, they have 716.

MessiWillSignForVilla
Yep, £360m is correct. (I assume the 40k is the average cost of a prisoner?) But compared to the £1 trillion+ that UK earns each year, its a drop in the ocean really.
