PaulC
I'm pissed off with consecutive governments of both parties being shite, and would definitely give someone new a go. Even UK Independence. And I hate politics. And I'm not a racist. Yes it is easy to get disillusioned with the mainstream parties but I think the UKIP is the wrong party to support. I don't know if they are racists does their immigration policy mean they are... I don't think so! I guess members of the bnp might attach themselves to them because they have no political voice themselves.
Daniel1Avfc
Voting tory or labour is the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Still does not get away from what their core values are and what sort of person they attract though does it

villaajax
Where I live it is very much a Tory safe area, the only party that comes close are the Lib Dems but I still vote Labour no matter what the election is for. You have to stick to your beliefs.

Seat68
Bickster I think you have to allign yourself with the party that ticks most of the ideological boxes, I dont think any party ticks them all for people so voting Labour, no matter what, even if they abandon some core principals as they are as close a party, for me at least, to my principals as anyone, they get my vote. appreciate there is a shitload of commas there so hope it makes sense.

thetrees
In the world of VT politics threads, anyone 1mm to the right of Blair is a racist nutter. In this world there are no 'nutters' on the left. In terms of 'nutters' the South Shields result was a better barometer, as the BNP and the Independent Socialist Party polled a very similar low amount of votes. UKIP are undoubtedly a party of protest that worries both of the main parties. Clearly they tap into the disgruntled Tory vote, but also tap into the traditional so-called "working class" vote, as some of our larger, predominantly white, council estates contain a high proportion of people with views that would no doubt be regarded as 'racist'. Such people would generally not vote BNP (Kingstanding notwithstanding), but would give there vote to a more moderate party, which in this case they would see UKIP as. Come general election time the former will vote Tory and the latter Labour, and the status quo will be restored.

They don't tick any ideological boxes, they no longer have an ideology. But having said that I see where you are coming from. My point however was that people voting Labour because of "their principals" are living in the past, Labour have no principals, they just wear different colour ties. If people look at what Labour have actually done and are saying, trust them to carry out those intentions, then of course they should do that, I just wish people would open their eyes before they make those decisions
Risso
Calling UKIP racist and refusing to have grown up discussions about immigration and the EU is playing right into their hands. Farage is a far more effective politician than either Milliband or Cameron, and he will make as much of his party's brief time in the limelight as he can. He made an interesting point on R4 this morning as to how the SDP, although unsuccessful as a mainstream party played their part in consigning the traditional Labour party values to the bin. I could well see UKIP doing similar to the Conservatives.
bickster Posted May 3, 2013 Author Moderator Share Posted May 3, 2013 Oh and just to reiterate, the expressed intention of this topic was to expose the real nutters lurking within the ranks of the UKIP candidates, which as we've seen isn't just the odd one or two, one suspects the media have only just scratched the surface of exposing them
