Anthony Posted May 17, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted May 17, 2013 Best of Depeche Mode. It's not a singles collection, nor is it their greatest hits. Just best of. End of.
bickster Posted May 17, 2013 Moderator Share Posted May 17, 2013 Oh and any "Best of" should never include a new single, only just released to coincide with the album release (i.e. promote the album)Most of them sadly do
maqroll
The first "Best of" record I ever owned was "Hot Rocks" by Rolling Stones. It's still a great compilation.

Mark Albrighton Posted October 23, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted October 23, 2023 (edited) Ok then. Do you prefer best of albums that go song by song in chronological order, or do you prefer a bit of variation in the running order? Personally, I prefer it when it’s mixed up through the back catalogue. To briefly refer back to Pink Floyd as an example, their Echoes best of they released 20 years ago mixed up the various phases of their career. I enjoyed the results hugely. Firstly, it irritated Roger having the stuff he played on mixed in with the stuff they did after he left - so that’s a positive. Secondly, a lot of their stuff typically segued from one song into another on the original recordings so to hear them mix the transition from Wish You Were Here to Jugband Blues to High Hopes kinda gives the songs a different flavour to the original album versions. Going from 1975, back to 1968 (or whenever the hell Syd thought he was back then) forward to 1994 is at least a bit more interesting to my ears than going in order. Always feels rather like milking it. GarethRDR
Pah, why bother with so called "Best Ofs" when you can just release a ~£1300 57 x LP collection of everything you've ever shat out? Oh Omar, you mad bastard. Well at least it's still better value for money than most Tool merch.

bickster Posted October 25, 2023 Moderator Share Posted October 25, 2023 I was just thinking whilst reading this (and the James Bond themes thread) that I don’t really listen to best ofs much. Next album on… Memento Mori - a career spanning best of Barry Adamson, it even breaks my rule of no new singles It also doesn’t contain any of his Visage tracks (they really wouldn’t fit) It's great! (And looking at it, it’s one of those HMV haven’t got a clue about pricing albums. £16.99 for a double about 4 years ago Which got me thinking about other best ofs and continuing the bass player theme… I Could've Been A Contender. At the time of release it was a career spanning best of Jah Wobble (it includes PIL tracks), his career has clearly gone on from the point of this Triple CD album, so it’s an early and mid period best of now but here’s the thing, the label that put it out was Trojan. Trojan, a label that specialises in Jamaican music puts out an album by a white bloke from London, it’s also a label he's never been on, so they had to licence every single track, which I guess frees them up to really choose the best tracks. I can’t think of another white artist that was ever released by Trojan, a complete oddity. An even bigger bargain bucket album bought for less than fiver in Sainsbury’s of all places
rjw63
Beach Boys / Ten Years of Harmony 1970-1980. My favourite period by the band, included two (at the time) unreleased tracks from the vaults and one that was only released on a movie compilation lp. theboyangel
Richard Hawley has just released Now Then: The Very Best of Richard Hawley. Great musician and probably deserves more acclaim.
