GeorgeVilla82 Posted February 17, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted February 17, 2013 I've got a few days spare and a voucher for Eurostar. Not really that fond of Paris, so thought I might try Belgium. Has anyone been to Brussels or Bruges for a city break, and if so, any good? If you've been to both, which would you recommend?
Xela
Not been to either but my parents have and they wax lyrical about Bruges. They love it there. Mind you, they are in their 60's!
Jimzk5
Ain't been but researched brugge for its beer festival and it looks a fabulous city. And it doesnt have a horrible vegetable named after it

tonyh29
Bruge is quite dull tbh A town square with a load of restaurants and the landmark tower , a small market and a small canal trip and you are about done ... Oh and the Brewery tour of course Brussels is slightly better but not a lot Belgium sadly is dull Edited February 17, 2013 by tonyh29
CI
If you are a foodie you will love Bruges. Also great beers in Belgium and the Eurostar to Belgium is class.
GeorgeVilla82 Posted February 17, 2013 Author VT Supporter Share Posted February 17, 2013 Thanks all. Tonyh - still better than Paris though? Think I'll go for Bruges. I'm a bit of a foodie CI, so Bruges sounds like the better option, and the boyfriend likes his beer so he'll be happy.
CI
Make sure you eat fairly early GeorgeVilla82 as the restaurants tend to shut quite early - 930ish
Delphouneso
Been to both and I'd definitely recommend Bruges out of the two it's a beautiful city and perfect for a short break as there's not a whole lot to do there that you can't cover in a day or two. Brussels is a lot like Birmingham.
chappy
Bruges is lovely. And you can pretend you're in the film In Bruges "you're a **** inanimate object" etc etc
Seat68
Do both, Brussels is one of my favourite cities, really love the place. Bruges is an excellent place to spend a day.
Eames
If you go for Bruges go to Cambrinus. Great food and 400 beers in stock. Also if you can find it... go to a little pub/bar called "De Haare" its on a little side street off one of the main squares. Quality beer on draught. Nice places to go and see though and would recommend if only to tick off the list
CI
Make sure you try the seafood gratin, absolutely to die for. Not sure what it's called over there. Foie Gras (controversial) is quite big over there and I'm pretty sure you'll see horse on some menus.
Stevo985 Posted February 25, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted February 25, 2013 Bruges is lovely. And you can pretend you're in the film In Bruges "you're a **** inanimate object" etc etc That's basically the main reason I want to go to Bruges. "Purgatory's like the inbetweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you werren't all that great either." "....like Tottenham?" However I'd probably finish my trip by jumping off the tower in the main square so I'm putting it off for now. briggaman
I really like both. Brussels is more lively and much bigger. Bruges is smaller and more scenic.

Had a cracking set menu in there as well for €25 each. Pretty cheap for Bruges.
