VillaChris
Surely if it's a 40 team world cup then that would mean it would have to be a 5 week tournament unless they find a way to incorporate an extra game every day. Players already turn up to the tournament exhausted from a draining domestic season so I think it's a terrible idea for that alone. 32 is more than enough. Voinjama
32 is the perfect number, it divides down perfectly too. They should leave it how it is. Edited October 28, 2013 by Voinjama
Xela
Agree. 32 for World Cup and 16 for Euros The Euros is a better tournament anyway IMO. No weak links like the World Cup, but saying that it is nice to see the African and Asian teams at the WC

No weak links like the World Cup, but saying that it is nice to see the African and Asian teams at the WC I agree, I have enjoyed the Euro's more recently as every game seems to mean something. Not like the World Cup where quite a few of the games mean **** all. Shame that the Euro's in 2016 are going to be more drawn out and become more like the World Cup. Dr_Pangloss
You and your crazy ideas! What would they call it? I would actually call it 'The Champions Cup;.
Isa
No point of increasing the number when the European quota will remain the same anyway. There are enough crap nations from Asia/Africa who qualify already. Four-team groups work perfectly well too. Voinjama
For African and Asian teams to get more spaces in the world cup, they should have to earn it. Only 1 of the 6 african teams made it out of the group in 2010
VillaChris
Platini was on today about Concacaf getting two extra places! No mention of South America getting a 6th spot though and Europe would only get 1 more.
kurtsimonw
Even if they gave Europe another 8 places the quality of the worst European teams would be better than some of the other regions!

The_Rev
32 is the perfect number, it divides down perfectly too. They should leave it how it is. You can make 40 work the same way as 32. It's quite easy to go 40 > 16 > 8 > 4 > 2, you just have eight groups of five teams instead of eight groups of four teams. Top two qualify for the knockout stages, bottom three go home. We won't have a situation like Italia 90 where it was almost impossible to get eliminated in the group phase but it will probably mean the tournament lasts five or six weeks. I don't think it needs to happen but FIFA sure like selling TV rights to countries and the more of them who qualify the more will pay a premium for the World Cup finals. Zatman
I see why Platini has come up with this idea as Blatter is actually trying to reduce the amount of European and South American teams currently in the World Cup Edited October 29, 2013 by Zatman
VillaChris
Just seen Mexico have selected a Mexican league 23 man squad for the two play off games against New Zealand so the likes of Chico Hernandez and Gio Dos Santos not included. Carlos Vela remains in exile. They've also changed coach again since their last match. Not sure what to make of this, I think they'd comfortably beat New Zealand with their foreign players but then again they were garbage in concacaf so maybe this is a gamble worth taking? Rovers13
Coach said it was due to travel. It also could be cause he coaches in the Mexican league and feels he has something to prove.
Ponky
In the cricket world cup in the past they have had a qualification tournament for the minnow teams with the top 4 or so going through to the actual Cup. Maybe they could do something similar here with all the playoff teams going to a tournament a year before the WC and ensure that only the strongest of those teams make it through regardless of their confederation. They could create more playoff spots for the stronger continents to make it a worthwhile tournament.Play it instead of the Confederations Cup which is basically pointless. BOF Posted November 4, 2013 Moderator Share Posted November 4, 2013 The problem with that solution is you end up with the distinct possibility of certain areas of the world not being represented by anyone, which is a key ingredient to a world cup. It would be a good compromise if you were trying to appease fans who want stronger sides in the world cup but FIFA don't necessarily want that. We have all the strong sides. We have all the sides likely to contend the actual cup. The next thing after that is to make sure every part of the world gets represented and has an interest in it. Or to put it another way. Don't fix what ain't broken.
LondonLax
He was saying it should be teams destined for the playoffs. I think he meant that confederation group winners from each region would still be there automatically.
