Zatman
yeah back then their was no locked in Top 4 spot or ridiculous spending as it rotated a bit as teams like Leeds, Newcastle, Chelsea all got into champions league and was more open. e.g Ipswich got promotion in 2000 and next season finished 5th 4 points off 2nd spot. that will never happen again

That doesn't really explain why where we were wasn't good enough and now aiming to get back there is praised.

We did get some big name players when Doug was chairman but they rarely paid off. Dean Saunders was the exception. Stan Collymore Was Brian Little's big signing! Everyone's entitled to their opinion but they are not entitled to have it taken seriously. There are thousands of pages of discussion on here discussing the broader picture around why we finished where we did and why it won't happen next season. Those still moaning about our league position seem to be the ones with the narrowest field of vision, looking almost completely at the league table as the beginning and end of their argument because it is what fits their point of view. That's fine, but it's also utter bollocks IMHO.

Last season was the lowest points total we've ever had in the prem, this season was the second lowest. Why don't you wait to see how we do next season before making your mind up one way or another? I think we can all see that things were a complete mess pre-lambert. He's now come in and looks to know what he's doing in the transfer market, although not quite so much when it comes to organizing a defence. With the wages properly being slashed of late, we'll get to see how lerner, and lambert, fare from what could only be called ground zero right now. From this point onwards there are no excuses. We can't blame inexperienced kids as they've all had a full season. We can't blame wages being too high as they're way down and we can't blame the transition to a new manager. This is where it starts for us
Kwan
It should be noted that drawing comparisons between how Lerner ran the Browns and how Lerner is running Villa aren't exactly one to one. Lerner never wanted to own the Browns. That doesn't excuse him of some hilarious managerial appointments, but I don't think it's a matter of interest level here. Moreso competency. Also, can we put to bed anyone saying that he's selling players to put money in his pocket? The club has been in red every season since RL took over. Whatever the case may be, it is not that Lerner is pocketing the money from sales Edited May 21, 2013 by Kwan
bickster Posted May 21, 2013 Moderator Share Posted May 21, 2013 One things for sure, Lerner didnt buy Villa for a hobby. Hes a business man and he wants a profit. How he does this is anyones guess. Getting rid of high earners is a good startWhich businesses does the businessman own? He ceased to be a businessman some time agoYou think villa isnt a business to him? Sorry to burst your bubble but thats exactly what it is.Sorry to burst yours but if Villa was a business it would have gone to the wall some time ago. It's debts are about twice the size of its value
