YLN
If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with big JC. While I don't believe he had magical powers, if any of the new testament is true, it sounds like he was the **** man. A gentle voice of reason that appealed to people in a barbaric time. The church has lost its way entirely, but spreading the idea of peace and love for your fellow man was not such a bad idea around the year 0. Xela
I do like Stephen Fry (in a non homosexual way). Extremely clever, witty and would be a great person to have a pint with. Waiting for Tony's comments! From a historical point of view then its got to be luminaries like Darwin, Brunel, Newton, etc. If I had to pick one.. Brunel. CrackpotForeigner
A couple of worthy candidates to show that it's not always the really well-known ones who deserve the most recognition: Lazaro Cardenas, prez of Mexico in the 1930's: A socialist revolutionary who avoided the butchery and greed for power that often goes with being a socialist revolutionary; Nationalised the Mexican oil industry and supported the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War when everyone else was quietly or not-so-quietly working against them. Fridjoff Nansen, Norwegian polar explorer and Nobel peace prize winner. Pioneer in neuroscience, leader of truly epic polar adventures, champion of refugees and POW's, leading oceanographer.
