Whatever people think about him he's a winner. He was never fancied to get the Republican nomination let alone the Presidency.

Very true. Taking away the political views (I know I know) fair play to him did what some would think is impossible.

Pretty much a loser in some ways.  He has a string of business failures behind him, and he's now worth less than if he had simply put in a savings bank the vast fortune he inherited and watched the interest roll in.  But his supporters seem to think he's some kind of master of commerce.

get used to that...something tells me in 4 years time people will be asking where this wall is

I've never done the research to see and with tv and social media its kind of lost now but i'd be interested to know in which states trump made all of his claims ie id expect the mexican quotes to be made in somewhere like arizona or texas, the muslim quotes to be made in the north east etc he's played a very good game

i think there are 2 glimmers of hope 1) i expect him to actually know his weaknesses but not declare them, he'll build a very good team around him (although sarah palin getting a high flying role might change my opinion on that) 2) half of what he's said was said in effect in order to win votes and what we wont see is how he behaves behind closed doors, i think he knows his audience, in front of a crowd of his fans he'll put his routine on, sat in a climate change meeting with all the world leaders he wont

Surely, if a sufficient amount of the Trump vote is the result of a sense of disenfrachisement, people wanting 'change' and people being frustrated at how their current leaders have behaved (not what you've posted but a theme that seems to have run through comments about why the vote has gone his way, in part) then won't this just make things worse and merely make those people even more angry?

Perhaps we ought to fear less the Trump of 20th January and immediately after and more the Trump that might come later.

If, immediately, he does none of the more extreme things that he has spoken about and relies purely upon implementing protectionist economic policies and hoping that this brings prosperity somehow then a year or two down the line it's quite possible that there are going to be even more problems.

ballot measures if anyones interested -

arkansas, florida, montana and north dakota all voted for medicinal marijuana, california, maine, Massachusetts and nevada all voted for recreational marijuana

colorado, arizona, maine and washington all voted for minimum wage increases, north dakota voted against lowering the age

nevada, california and washington have increased their gun controls, washington have voted for the ability to take peoples guns off them

oklahoma kept the death penalty, nebraska voted to bring it back!

florida rejected the ability of homeowners to sell electricity generated from solar panels etc, washington rejected a carbon tax, colorado rejected universal health care, they also had a vote on euthanasia but i havent seen that result

california voted for bilingual education

DC have voted to become the 51st state

not seen the results yet but LA had a vote on how much to invest on helping homeless people ($1.2bn set aside for them) whilst san francisco had a vote to ban homeless people sleeping in tents on the street! california had a vote on pornstars wearing condoms, 18 states had votes on hunting and fishing restrictions which i think have been absolutely battered, san diego voted for no new chargers stadium so they will be leaving

and finally after recently watching the brilliant 13th documentary on netflix the results arent in yet but colorado are apparently rejecting the vote to remove "There shall never be in this state either slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime" from their state law, means that they will continue making license plates for 10 cents an hour

Awol, some people think that fewer people will die in the Middle East under a Trump presidency than would have died under Clinton, because he will be less interventionist despite all the mouth.  What's your take on that?

I think Clinton was ready to impose a no fly zone in Syria and start a shooting war with Russia & Iran. Trump won't so that's probably a good thing.

Beyond that I guess it depends entirely on who his foreign policy team will be & whether he's really prepared to realign US alliances. Very hard to say whether a US disengagement would encourage more conflict as former partners lean in to regional disorder or the opposite.

The US navy did a big drill here a few weeks ago to practice evacuating their nationals. Quite surreal walking on the beach with my lad with Marines and hovercraft buzzing around - he thought it was great!

One interesting thing is that he has promised big investment in infrastructure, and has also made comments suggesting that he understands that a country with a sovereign fiat currency can choose to invest at will, rather than going along with this nonsense about "there's no money".

If he actually follows that through, it might prompt some useful discussion about the unused powers of government, and the political choices we make.

Yeah that's fine - & UK will be the biggest economy in Europe again. Shame about the Christmas market but we can't have everything.

Duh (seems appropriate) it's called a tactical nuclear strike for a reason.... do it later this month and we get to keep the markets all year round. Which is a victory for capitalism and sausage lovers all rolled into one! Someone tweet Katy Hopkins...

Nothing like waking up to wailing and gnashing of teeth  ... was quite surprised to get to work without the 3 minute warning going off and putting my duck and cover training to good use .

Like always I find it amusing that the warriors who want to burn down the establishment are now the ones protesting for the status Quo to be restored  and citing the stock market and the currency exchanges as their source for why Brexit / Trump is a bad thing

roll on 2017 when we get rid of Merkel , vive la revolution

@Straggler Thing is if they'd voted for Clinton or the UK had voted Remain it's taken as an endorsement of the status quo.

Its necessary to utterly reject the prevailing dogma and kick them in the teeth in order for the political elites to reform at all.

If they still don't get the message then they'll rightly fade into obscurity and irrelevance to be replaced by new actors.

Whatever gets you up in the morning ;)

Totally agree with the rest of your point though.

Its Amazing the level of political hot footing people are doing these last few months between view points as events unfold.

I mean that not in reference to contributors to this thread, more the real world and falsebook which seems to be a particular hotbed of ill informed political f-wittery. Never thought I'd long for the days of people sharing images of their cats and bloody dinner!

I actually think the discussion in this thread is better than most of the media coverage although I appreciate that's a rather hollow complement given said coverage could have been cobbled together by the kids in my boys nursery.

as did I , clearly B)

Luckily I don't do Twitter , but my Facebook feed has been taken over by world politics experts  , kinda funny that the same people that share the "muslims want to eat our children , share if you agree" posts are now the same ones saying Trump is evil as he wants to ban muslims from America
