they got the second option, but did not foresee the MAGA crowd not reasoning. Rs blocked the bill, but MAGA don’t take that into account, ‘the border is a problem and has not been fixed’ is all that matters.

The bill was led by a Republican with cross party support.

I was struck by how Trump and his minions have done exactly what the tories did here, to intentionally weaken the system for dealing with immigrants - then claim they have the solutions to fix it. I suppose at least Trump got his numbers down one way or another, compared to Suank and the Rwanda scheme.
