Awol
Getting a little too close with the investigation into links between Russia and the Tango man? Who knows, but definitely not situation normal across the pond.

At minimum, an obstruction of justice charge against the AG for removing the FBI director who is investigating the president and perhaps Sessions himself. villakram
Or maybe it is simply an attempt to restore credibility to the institution. Democrats do not like Comey as he "cost" Her the election. Republicans don't like Comey as he "cleared" Her. I.e., the two main political parties have no faith in the leader of the primary federal law enforcement agency. Comey's position was untenable and he had to go. Regardless of when/how it happened, the optics could not look good in the current political environment. maqroll
NY Times reporting that Comey learned of firing as he addressed FBI employees in LA. TV screens in the background flashed news of firing. Letter was then given to FBI.
villakram
Whatever of the politics/political implications of this... given some of the reprehensible behavior of the FBI in recent years, Comey deserves every single bit of embarrassment coming his way. il_serpente Posted May 10, 2017 VT Supporter Share Posted May 10, 2017 Perhaps something good can come of this: There should be enough Republicans in congress that will recognize that an FBI with a new director picked by Trump, whose campaign is under investigation, and Sessions, who is himself tangled up in the investigation, cannot possibly maintain the appearance of a fair, objective investigation free of influence from the administration. An independent counsel or special commission has to be appointed. If Republicans continue to stonewall this and pretend the only important issue is the red herring of unmasking, then they're going to be in for even more serious butt-hurt in the mid-term elections.

StefanAVFC Posted May 10, 2017 VT Supporter Share Posted May 10, 2017 http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/09/politics/grand-jury-fbi-russia/index.html Quote Washington (CNN)Federal prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas to associates of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn seeking business records, as part of the ongoing probe of Russian meddling in last year's election, according to people familiar with the matter. CNN learned of the subpoenas hours before President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey. The subpoenas represent the first sign of a significant escalation of activity in the FBI's broader investigation begun last July into possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia. The subpoenas issued in recent weeks by the US Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Virginia, were received by associates who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, according to the people familiar with the investigation. Robert Kelner, an attorney for Flynn, declined to comment. The US Attorney's Office in Alexandria, the Justice Department and the FBI also declined to comment. Talking about optics, this is simply an amazing move. It's a behind close doors, no press meeting at that. I bet in all the planning the Russians did for this they never in their wildest dreams thought it could go as well as this. Undermining their biggest ally in the most fundamental way possible. For me this the 08 crash equivalent for politics. You wake up one day and realise all those infallible institutions were really only paper thin all along. MakemineVanilla
Having seen Comey testify before the Senate Oversight Committee, where his testimony about Hilary's felonious private server and the leaks of names under investigation to the press was less than candid, it is hard to see his removal as heinous, scandalous, undeserved or unconstitutional.
