Papillon
Decent? He plays 30 odd league games for the best team in the country every year, he is always the first midfielder on the team sheet for Fergie in that sense. Sure he is a bit dull as a person and does things easy as a player, but he is very dependable and consistent. Obviously he is not just decent, he is very, very good. Another case is that he is not just a player protecting people in front of him, doing the short passing like Busquets without getting dirty. United field 2 midfielders and they have to contribute both going forward and also defending. Schooled by Fergie in that role and they would not challenge the top teams every single year if he was just decent. Jack Wilshere is also very good, and his potential is there for all to see. However, his level of consistency is nowhere near Carrick and he is also a bit rash in his tackling. Wilshere is more mobile and can contribute more in attack perhaps, but he does not score goals and he does not have many assists. This year he has 7-8 games in the Premier League and 0 assists/0 goals. In his "entire" PL career he has 4 assists and 2 goals, which is nothing to brag about. Carrick lies deeper in established attacks, no doubt about that, so his stats would never be that great anyway, but his career speaks for itself. Similar players to a degree, Carrick better now but Wilshere has higher potential given his age. I think people are too soon to brand players as great ones, but don't really incorporate level of consistency which is just as important.
Zatman
Carrick is by far Englands most underrated midfielder. He might not be as flashy as others but gets the job done for United season after season. He would probably have been more appreciated if he wasnt English where hustling and bustling centre midfielders is loved by majority of fans and media
PompeyVillan
England occasionally have players like Carrick who can control the tempo of the game, but don't use them because we prefer players that make sliding tackles and score the occasional 30 yarder for their club side. Wilshere anyway, is a player who can, with time develop into a player with the ability to control a game, but he can't at the moment.

Barry and Danny Murphy are probably only similar England midfielders to Carrick in last 10 years and Barry only got into England side under McLaren as a lot of inujries

kurtsimonw
England occasionally have players like Carrick who can control the tempo of the game, but don't use them because we prefer players that make sliding tackles and score the occasional 30 yarder for their club side. I just don't rate him personally. I went to England-San Marino and was very disappointed to see him in the side. His lack of ability to speed up play or pick that truly top pass played into their hands all day long. Think it was 2-0 when he went off with 20 mins to go, Shelvey came on and quickened things up and we win 5-0. The reason he's not played 30 games for England is because in terms of ability he's nowhere near Gerrard or Lampard. He's probably the first player I'd look to replace as United manager, they need someone who can sit deep and he can't and the defence is getting overrun as a result IMO. Wilshire is already better and will be a far better player in the future. Hopefully these injuries are a thing of the past. Zatman
but after RVP, Carrick has been their best player this season. His game isnt all action and vs San Marino he wouldnt be needed but against better opposition you need him

KHV
the most over rated player since nii lamptey was supposed to be the new pele. the press and the pundits seem to be having a wilshere wankfest at the moment. an average performance against a Brazil team who were total shite on the night. he has not had one stand out performance for Arsenal ever.
