LockStockVilla
wasn't there another attacking player from the French league that we almost signed but the selling club pulled the deal at the last minute and the player was furious, couldn't we go back in for him? The striker Bony from Vitesse? Edited December 31, 2012 by LockStockVilla
jacketspuds
Daniel Carrico joining Reading for 600k. Sporting captain with CL experience. Would have been worth a punt.
ciggiesnbeer
http://www.bbc.co.uk...otball/20879287 "Reading have signed Sporting Lisbon captain Daniel Carrico." Our relegation rivals first out of the gate with the kind of player we need. edit: beaten by jacketspuds Edited December 31, 2012 by ciggiesnbeer
LockStockVilla
Ah FFS, I had said a few times that I would have loved Carrico. Tidy CB or CDM. Bugger.
HalfTimePost
Newcastle haven't really 'unearthed' many gems. Davide Santon was known to anyone who has played football manager in the last 4 years, Cabaye was a well established player already Ba had been good for West Ham scoring 9 goals - only his knees was an off put for some clubs, otherwise a no brainer for £0. Ben Arfa was already a good player who was known for a poor attitude that they managed to snag Cisse was already a well established player and one of the top scorers in the Bundesliga and cost about £10m Marveaux was also a good player, lots of links to Liverpool before he chose Newcastle. I'll give them finding Tiote, an absolutely class find and getting him to Newcastle. What Newcastle did well was actively trying to bring in these players despite being in the Championship / being recently promoted. These are all players that we would have been saying on here in there situation 'why would they come here?' if we knew what they were like. Fair play to their board, they have a superb scout in Graham Carr finding these players who are criminally under valued in the market and some fantastic release-clauses i.e. Cabaye at £5m - which we were also ready to bid under Houllier - and actually completing these deals. Now they have a bed of these good, young players more are ready to join. Debuchy is another, who is a very very good player. £5m is an absolute bargain and should be going to a club much higher up the pecking order than Newcastle but yet again they seem able to pull it off. It's not even like they are over-spending on wages. I'd like to see Lambert delve more into the foreign markets than the British market, Westwood, Lowton have been good so far but think more value is to be had in the European leagues. ciggiesnbeer
I am already worried we havent announced our first signing. We needed to have been working on our new midfield for weeks now. Even when winning we were getting overrun in the center of the park.
Dr_Pangloss
Well I'm not sure I'd be getting upset over Reading signing someone that most on here have barely seen play and is also completely untested in any worthwhile league. Obviously 600k is low risk but who knows how it'll turn out? Impossible to say that this is the guy we 'need'.

dudevillaisnice
To be fair Michu was well known to anyone that watched Revista each week on Sky. Not exactly an unearthed gem like many are making out but credit to Swansea for taking the punt. Sadly Villa haven't specialised in those sort of signings for a very long time. You don't even need to watch Revista tbh, his stats stood out for someone playing in a "not so good team" in Spain. Swansea took the risk and it worked out. Pez1974
A couple of ITK's mentioning that we want Lescott til the end of the season - personal ITK's rather than general, who often seem to be close to what is upcoming. I think this would be a top move. Happy New Year to all VT'ers. And get down the pub!

VillanousOne
injuries aside Mellberg, Laursen, Bouma, Delaney, Barry and Yorke have been bargains. if he stays fit Vlaar could be an bargain buy.

the_eristic
That's the guy, can we not sign him? Because he's already got 15 goals in 16 games this season. His stock has shot up quite a bit, been in talks with Chelsea and Liverpool according to his agent. Possibly just BS, but he won't be nearly as cheap even if we are still in the picture. I think this would be a top move. Happy New Year to all VT'ers. And get down the pub! Lescott on a loan deal with the option to sign at the end of the season would be good business. He'd want to come here too, and sign a new deal as well, probably.
Villan4Life
sigh, i suggested him in Summer and seems he might have been offered to us, why did we not take a punt?? http://www.dailymail...ea-swooped.html If Roberto Mancini is having sleepless nights over missing out on Robin van Persie, then one can only imagine the mood at Tottenham's training ground every time Michu scores for Swansea. There, at Hotspur Way, something of a dark comedy routine has been going on this season between Pat Jennings and Tim Sherwood, an exchange that usually ends with one telling the other: 'Don't mention Michu'. He's the one that got away. Twice. And once he was going for free. But Tottenham are not alone. Sportsmail understands that Fulham, Stoke, West Brom, West Ham and Aston Villa were also told by an independent agent in Spain about the 26-year-old in the summer and encouraged to bid for a man who had just scored 15 goals in La Liga.
