CVByrne
They must be looking intently at Scotland tonight. Their vote is in November.... A close friend is from Barcelona and she is bonkers nationalist. Despises Spain, wouldn't support Spanish team even when it was 80% catalan players. She can't take even slightest bit of ribbing, call her Spanish and she cuts through you with a stare. But she is one of the nicest people I've ever met. But on this issue she is very serious. maqroll
Yep, the hatred is real there, it will be vey interesting to see how Madrid handles a Yes result. It would be a real shame if it led to civil unrest.
maqroll
La Liga says they will ban Barca and Espanyol from the league if Catalonia gains independence... There could be a "Secession League" with Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibs, Barca, Espanyol, Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Sampdoria, Genoa, Shaktar Donetsk... They might say they will but when the next deal for TV rights comes in at about 50% of what they are getting at the moment then they will soon change their tune. It's just posturing to try and prevent a yes vote.

I agree with you there but apparently it will take a law change from the Spanish government, it's not just up to the board at La Liga which might make things more interesting. The_Rev
They touched on the matter on Sid Lowe's Spanish Football Podcast. The head of La Liga is a hugely pro union guy with a background of working for the government so nobody is taking what he says very seriously. If Catalonia does cede then Barcelona and Espanyol will almost certainly be invited to play in the Spanish league. It already happens in other places, none of Monaco, Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham or Berwick play in the league of the country they are based in.
dont_do_it_doug.
Madrid would walk it every year. Same as with Celtic without Rangers... Oh wait (twice)...
The_Rev
I'll bet Celtic still win the SPL by 10+ points this season. Everybody else in the division will keep beating each other and they will go on a run where they win 15 in a row or something.

The_Rev
Just for the sake of clarity, the voters were asked two questions. Should there be a Catalonian state? and Should that state be independant? It's a vote which the Spanish government will probably ignore. The British government could have ignored the Scottish poll in the event of a yes vote had they wanted to, but it would have caused civil unrest. I wonder what the fallout from this will be? CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Spain is an interesting place right now. Podemos, the left wing party that didn't exist a year ago, is leading opinion polls. Edited November 10, 2014 by CarewsEyebrowDesigner
The_Rev
https://soundcloud.com/thespanishfootballpodcast/the-spanish-football-podcast-the-catalan-question They talked about it again in Sid Lowe's podcast. He's lived in Spain for ten years or more so he is speaking from a fairly informed position. The first ten minutes or so of the show talk about the poll, what it means in Spain and the cultural roles of the two football clubs in the city of Barcelona and how they differ from the easy pigeonholes that most people (myself included) have placed them in. maqroll
So, having mostly ignored this story lately, was it just a symbolic vote? If so, why bother?
