LondonLax
yet we've had how many managers in a row now with the exact same problem at corners, despite having different players involved? that's an incredible coincidence How could the seasons be related though? The defence is totally different from the one Houllier had and even last season as well. On top of that, the management staff have all changed also. They are basically two seperate teams who both happen to be poor at set pieces. We had poor defenders before and we have replaced them with poor defenders so the problem has not been solved. Zatman
He might have a point though as Cuellar.Collins and Dunne are much better in the air than Baker, Clark and Vlaar and we still conceded 52 set piece goals in last season
LondonLax
I don't think there can be any relation though. We had a poor record at set pieces before. This current side also has a poor record at set pieces. One doesn't have to be because of the other.
Zatman
maybe though in last 10 years only ever felt safe at set-pieces when Laursen played and even then we conceded a bit
briny_ear
WHy is it shocking, its coming down each season... Oh, I don't know... We have 15 games left this seaon so there's plenty of opportunity to beat last season's 25!
El-Reacho
It's 100% a psychological thing. It doesn't matter how much they practice and who it is that coaches them. It's a vicious circle but the only way for the team to improve defending set pieces is by not conceding. A clean sheet after they've cleared a good few corners and free kicks out of the area will do them the world of good. And they'll build on that to do the same in the next game. Then they'll gradually become calmer, more confident, and better able to concentrate on winning it. They're totally shitting themselves when they try and defend corners and this affects their concentration.
P3te
How could the seasons be related though? The defence is totally different from the one Houllier had and even last season as well. On top of that, the management staff have all changed also. That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out. New management doesn't necessarily mean new bread and butter coaching staff. If there has been any back room constants throughout all that time, then that's the source of the problem, defensively
KjParton
Could it be due to the fact that in training our corner deliveries are shiiiiite?
Troglodyte Posted January 25, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 25, 2013 Zonal marking gets so much criticism in this country, but maybe that's worth a try? I'm not saying it's the answer, and in trying to change our entire defensive strategy for set pieces may be very difficult at this point of the season (although we probably couldn't get much worse) - but Lambert has seemed to suggest recently that there's nothing more he can do because we simply defend man-for-man at corners. Ginko
Unacceptable that it hasn't been sorted out yet. I knew footballers were traditionally stupid but this is ridiculous. If man marking isn't working, give zonal a go ffs or at least try something different. It's the stubborness of Lambert that's pissing me off at the moment. The shit corners, Lowton floating diagonals into the box against Bradford constantly with absolutely no success. TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT!
TRO
Gabby's failure to score on a regular basis failure to defend set pieces Failure to score from set pieces Failure to keep/defend a lead Failure to buy players that have an effect on things just a complete failure to deal with things that need dealing with. Mac
it's been a weakness for long before lambert tbh something is wrong on the training ground at villa. it's not our managers, it can't be does anyone know if the coaching staff has been retained from the mon days, or if they're all cleared out when a new manager comes in? im not talking about the really important guys like assistant managers or head coaches, but the rest of the staff? because we have the same issues whoever the manager is, regardless of how often we change, and that suggests to me that the problem goes deeper than the guy in the manager's seat Agree, but there is a management TEAM at villa. Lambert is responsible ultimately, and he's clearly not ensuring it's worked on effectively in training. That and he believes he can keep picking players up and motivating them , regardless of the run of shocking results they've been on. There comes a point where players are not going to listen because things never get better for them, and this is the cycle they are in now. Something has to change - players / Lambert / coaches / sports psychologists /new players because this team IS going down unless it does
