villa4europe
in my mind pundits like to strangely flirt with the idea that something edgy or dangerous could happen at these gamesReturn to the dark days! That's the ironic thing about it, they try their hardest to sell these non event derbies and not actual derbies (like villa v Leicester) by almost glamorising the potential for it to kick off, but then when you get a proper Derby and it does kick off (or in our case it didn't even kick off they just tried to tell everyone it did) they hammer it
Stevo985 Posted September 15, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted September 15, 2015 Nothing is as bad as the BBC stating that New York City vs New York RedBulls had become one of the biggest derbies in world football.

They are parasites, and I'm not using that term unkindly or inappropriately. They literally feed financially off any story that happens. Whether that be ones they've manufactured themselves out of thin air (or incited...), or by hypocritically sensationalising those which start by themselves. A repugnant industry that is simultaneously and unashamedly equal part shit-stirrer and tattle-tale.
Marka Ragnos Posted September 22, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted September 22, 2015 Tired of media commentators calling black CF and FW players who are tall and skilled "beasts." #racism Just heard again on 5live pod. For the 600th time this year.

HanoiVillan
No, I kind of agree with him. I've yet to hear a white player referred to as a 'beast'. I'm sure it's happened, but it's much less common. I know it's meant as a compliment, but it's pretty racially charged in a negative way really. Seat68
I hadnt noticed that, but now you know, its always in reference to a black player.

Seat68
Well I only put beast footballers into google, the top result was a give me sport page and their top 5 beast footballers were all black. Obviously its not conclusive, just pointing it out.
Stevo985 Posted September 23, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted September 23, 2015 I think it is used for black players more. But could that be that there is more black footballers with the kind of physique that would lend themselves to being called a beast?I can't think of many big, muscular, good white players. Popular Post BOF Posted September 23, 2015 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted September 23, 2015 I think this is an example of if you look hard enough and have the right motivation you can be offended by anything you want. I refer to Stephen Fry. "Oh you're offended? So f**king what?"

Marka Ragnos Posted September 23, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted September 23, 2015 Honestly, I wasn't "looking for it." I'm just an ordinary soccer fan from the East Coast in the US. I'm politically moderate. I just began noticing when I listened to British commentaries that beast is almost invariably used this way. Knowing America's history, esp. slavery, and the notion of treating people as "beasts of burden," makes it resonate, and I've always read a good amount of black literatures from around the world, where this kind of thing comes up. It's just something that irks me.
