CI
You're right he isn't captain material, nowhere near
BOF Posted July 10, 2012 Moderator Share Posted July 10, 2012 The logic on Ireland seems to be that he isn't as mad or as crap as he used to be and that he might benefit from it. Well none of the players are as mad or as crap as Ireland used to be and they'd all benefit from it. It appears as though it is the absence of reasons not to, rather than any particular reason in favour of it that is making people suggest Ireland. I don't think that's a good enough reason tbh. Bent would be a better captain and would benefit just as much if not more from the position. He's a better pro and more respected in the game, he's a better role-model for the youths, not to mention the seniors. He's a better representative of Aston Villa FC and he's the highest profile player we've got and Lambert has recently been singing his praises. He's the poster boy for AVFC in the squad and there's no reason really that he shouldn't be the captain in the current absence of any other outstanding candidate. That may change as we go into the summer window but as of now I'll take Bent over Ireland by an absolute mile.
Ooh-Ah
I suppose it doesn't matter too much but Bent isn't great at interviews. He speaks quite quickly. Undoubtedly a nice guy though. Ireland isn't especially confident in front of the mic either. The Cork accent doesn't help. (I'm allowed to say that because I come from a county with a similarly hilarious accent.) On the other hand, Dunne and Given come across very well in interviews. Given is actually very articulate. I can't imagine any of our players giving a rousing speech in the dressing room, aside from maybe Given or Collins.
SikhInTrinity
Look a Captain just needs to lead on the pitch, Bent for me out of current crop. We have a great leader on the sidelines so it's not a massive issue for me.
Richard
Not sure we have one at the club, still hope we buy one to be honest

Yeah let's face it, if this guy was giving you some speech of that type, you would probably end up laughing
CI
I can see it going to Dunne by default at this stage

jraiye
Why not El Ahmadi - a central midfielder who dictates play and is a calming influence on the ball - leading by action?
jacketspuds
We need to sign a captain. A commanding CB that can lead our team. We do not have a captain in the squad now that Petrov is out.

FamousHolteUnion
One of the journo's posted yesterday (I think it was Abraham or Nursey) that Lambert really likes Ciaran Clark and is hoping to start him at CB and get another in to partner him. I think Clark should be captain.
HongKongVillan Posted July 10, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted July 10, 2012 Just not Dunne, not fit to wear the shirt let alone being captain. Given seems like the only feasible option we have now which is very worrying
Zatman
Roy Keane, one of the greatest captains of the PL era, intentionally ended a fellow professional's career. was a bad tackle but Haaland finished game and played more games after that tackle
Zatman
Havent really had a natural vocal leader since Mellberg or Laursen not sure but I could see Holman getting the armband if Lambo is impressed by his attitude and workrate
Swerbs
Clark's certainly captain material for the future, but right now I'm not too sure.

Overdubber
Gabby for me, despite his dreadful second half of the season, where he actually gained the captaincy. Hope he plays better under Lambo, as he seems to be the last of the locals, so to speak...
