Skruff
Great cameo today. I really want him to start against West Brom. We'll have to retain possession much better than we have been doing if we are going to win, and Lowton is one of our best players technically. I think he's a good attacking full back. His touch, passing and crossing are all really good. He even reads the game and intercepts well. It's just he's poor defending one v. one. Which, ironically, is where Bacuna shines. As I'm bored of watching KEA and Sylla either pass it backwards or lose possession, I'd love to see Bacuna pushed into midfield and Matty back in the side. Something like this:GuzanLowton, Vlaar, Clark, Luna Westwood Bacuna, Delph Weimann, AgbonlahorBenteke That is possibly the best Villa side except maybe someone else instead of Weimann, it looks really good on paper. N'zogbia for Weimann, that's less likely to happen so Tonev might be another option.

I liked the way Tonev was just floating around so if Bacuna was going to be moved up then I'd still go 2 up front (any combination of Benteke and Gabby/Kozak can work) with Tonev behind them. RimmyJimmer
Him and Bacuna on the same flank. I'm begging you Paul. It's been obvious for weeks. Hope he's grasped it finally. He scouted and bought them both before anybody on here knew who they were, I'm sure he has cottoned on.
omariqy
Apparently Bacuna will be continuing at RB for the time being. Shame as I agree Lowtona and Bacuna on the right would be a good move.
SikhInTrinity
If Delph is out then I can see Bacuna being shifted into Midfield.

Hope he's grasped it finally. He scouted and bought them both before anybody on here knew who they were, I'm sure he has cottoned on. My point was that Lowton and Bacuna should both be playing on the right hand side. I'd have dropped Weimann to set up this way. Weimann got injured and he played Lowton and Bacuna as wing backs against West Ham. Lowton then starts on the bench against Cardiff and Lambert is seen as a tactical genius for bringing him on and playing them together on the right side. We should be starting this way. That's my point. I'm not doubting that he's done his scouting. They're 2 great signings and fair play to Lambert for that. But they need to both be playing on the right and hopefully they'll do so from the start against WBA.
Larscapaldi
Matt Lowton: I know we’ve had a tough start, but I’ve fallen short of last season 21 Nov 2013 08:14 Aston Villa: Matt Lowton admits to Mat Kendrick that he hasn't been as good as last season Matt Lowton gets away from Ryan Giggs Matt Lowton has revealed his desire to win back his first-team place at Villa and admitted: “I’ve only got myself to blame” for his early-season loss of form. In a refreshingly honest interview, Lowton accepts manager Paul Lambert’s decision to drop him after he failed to hit the heights of his impressive debut season in claret and blue. Lowton was a virtual ever-present in 2012-13, but has been restricted to a bit-part role after being left out in favour of Leandro Bacuna following a disappointing start this term. “I’ve only got myself to blame, it’s my own fault,” said Lowton. “I’m not trying to say I was dreadful, but the standards I set last season were sky-high for myself, which I was very pleased about. “I said to myself I don’t want to fall below those standards, but I’ve been at fault for a few goals this season and it’s not good enough. “We want to be a team that’s pushing on in the top half of the league and we’re not going to get that if people are not doing their jobs right.” Lowton was recalled at right-back for the draw at West Ham earlier this month and came off the bench to help Villa beat Cardiff in their previous match. He hopes his return to first-team duty signals an upturn in fortunes ahead of Monday night’s derby against Albion at The Hawthorns. “I know we’ve had a tough start, but I’ve fallen short of last season,” he said. “It happens in football, I was dropped and Leo’s come in and done well so there’s no reason for the manager to try and rush me back in. “I’ll keep training as hard as I can and make sure I’m ready. “At West Ham a couple of weeks ago the gaffer called on me to do a job and I thought I did reasonably well and the same against Cardiff. “Getting dropped is part and parcel of football and it will happen again, I know it will, so I’ve just got to make sure if anything happens that when I come back I’m strong and try to keep my position.” The 24-year-old has continued to work hard in training and refused to let his head drop on the practice pitches of Bodymoor Heath. “If anyone’s not pulling their weight they’re going to get dropped,” he added. “It’s been tough to take for me. Last season I was virtually ever-present. I just need to get back in the team because ultimately all I want to do is play football. “I always work hard whether I’m in the team or not. But I’ve got to show the manager I’m not going to let my head drop. “I’ve got to keep going and make sure I’m ready and that I’m fit enough when I’m called upon. It could be at any point. “Even if I’m named on the bench, someone could get injured after two minutes and I could be in. So I’ve got to make sure I set my stall out as if I’m starting, so to speak, so I’m ready to go.” Lowton and team-mate Joe Bennett were at King Edwards VI School in Aston this week, promoting the Aston Villa PL4Sport programme, which encourages participation in golf, tennis, badminton, basketball, hockey, judo, table tennis and girl’s football. Sessions take place at various locations across the city. http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-matt-lowton-admits-6325732 Edited November 21, 2013 by Larscapaldi
AshVilla
Refreshing to see a player acknowledging his faults and not blaming others for his poor form Hopefully he will get a run in the team now after his assist against Cardiff with a right side combination of him and Bacuna

AVTuco Posted November 26, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) Should be starting next game, at RB or midfield/wing. You have to wonder how poor he is at training since Lambert won't give him a chance. Edited November 26, 2013 by AVTuco
PaulC
Yes to be fair Bacuna has done well at right back apart from the first half yesterday.
villaglint
I think Bacuna has two great assets for a defender in the Premier League - strength and pace. Both far in advance of Lowton. It really is no coincidence we have been generally leaner at the back with him in it. I do really rate Matty though and feels he offers a little more going forward. It's a nice problem to have and maybe both can be accommodated at some point.
AVTuco Posted November 26, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted November 26, 2013 They could, and should be. Bacuna and Lowton, accomodated at the same time, I mean.
abdulaziz1
They could, and should be. Bacuna and Lowton, accomodated at the same time, I mean. Only on home games though .. or dropping one of the wingers for them .. we couldnt afford to play 442 away from home for a whole match .. Yesterday only Bacuna stayed in the right .. Sylla could not do very well as RM ..

Electric Avenue
I'd like to see Lowton and Bacuna starting together down the right flank.
smetrov
I think people clamouring for his recall think were are getting the Lowton of last season back. He's been a pales shadow of that every game this season - his performance against newcastle in particular, made him a liability IMO. I would want some convincing before he is recalled. Possibly being a bit pedantic, but unless you're attending the coaching sessions, we'll have to assume the manager thinks he's ready - and his cameo v Cardiff was encouraging.
