Sureshot
Andy Cole didnt take penalties. He scored one penalty in his entire career. If you take away penalties, then Shearer has scored 202 Premier League goals, and Andy Cole has 188. Sauce 58 goals from pens is an awful lot; behind Shearer Fat Frank is next with 35, and only 3 people are in the 20s. Still, doesn't take away from the fact that Shearer was a class player. Zatman
So let me get this straight... 3 of the 21 players who have scored 100 career goals in the Premier League are currently playing for us? and if Dunney gets a few more OGs he be there soon as well
Zatman
If penalties were not included Heskey would be probably be in top 5 as except Cole im sure rest were regular penalty takers

You wouldn't stick 50p on Cole doing it!
villa4europe
i disagree about shearer being world class, he was another one of these who was one of the prems best players because he was the best at our game, put him in italy or spain where he wouldnt be able to use his strength and defenders have a bit more about them and he wouldnt have been as good IMO not saying he wasnt a brilliant player because he was but id put him alongside the likes of Gerrard, brilliant at playing prem football

Quality players are quality players, its just a matter of adapting slightly.
The_Rev
Shearer was sensational. A genuine 30 goal a season striker. He could have gone to any club in the world from Blackburn, and he simply committed the crime of signing for his hometown club. At that point it looked like Newcastle would go on and win the league though, so you cant accuse Shearer of letting his heart lead his head too much, though I do wonder what we would think of him had he gone to Manchester United, Real Madrid or AC Milan instead. Nigel Posted February 2, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted February 2, 2012 The one thing I remember about Shearer was if his team scored a goal it was a surprise if it was scored by anyone else!
BOF Posted February 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted February 2, 2012 Shearer also didn't take the easy way out career-wise. His goals were scored for lesser teams who he turned into good sides.
Zatman
very true but at end i always felt he might have held Newcastle back. His last few seasons he wasnt great and got most of his goals from spot
Richard
and if Gregory had of had his way then Shearer might have been the 6th player on that list to have played for us
bickster Posted February 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted February 2, 2012 Shearer,as good as he was and he was good, there's no denying it, was also a **** dirty elbowing, stamping cheating twunt that seemed to get away with murder and got every penalty he ever asked for. kidlewis
Shearer is the best penalty taker of all time no question. Edit I didn't know tissier scored 47 from 48 attempts that's impressive. But I still prefer shearer for his top left smashed penalties. Also THAT volley he scored against someone I cannot remember was as close as you will get to a ball catching fire a la Cantona Nike advert
coda
Shearer is the best penalty taker of all time no question. I'd guess Steve Bruce or Le Tissier had higher success rates.

Zatman
Shearer is the best penalty taker of all time no question. Im sure hundreds of German players are ahead of him Didnt Sorensen save 2 penalties from Shearer for separate clubs
