leviramsey Posted September 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted September 4, 2013 As for why it has us 11th (and 8th of the PL clubs), being #1 in strength-of-schedule (quality of teams played) by a fair distance has a lot to do with it.
The_Rev
Yes, that's Nuneaton, ranked as the 16th best team in England... (I've lost track of whether I'm still playing for Nuneaton... I suppose they are my second favorite non-league side after Kiddy). Nuneaton represent!
hogso
Considering going over on Saturday, I have a shit ton of Ikea being delivered, but if that's here early, I'll go over - plus I'm in walking distance now. Ok it's a long walk, but still. My grandad (exiled Cov fan) has been to a couple of home games this season and been well impressed. Looked through some old Boro' programmes during my move (95-00), great memories. The 6-1 v Beduff amongst them, what an occasion that was Also some pre season games - they played villa in 98 or 99, didn't go though, no idea why not :/ Edited September 4, 2013 by hogso

leviramsey Posted September 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted September 4, 2013 Apparently I'm no Lolley, I've moved on from Nuneaton to Oadby Town
The_Rev
Nice to see you have been working on the accent! And to just fill you in a bit more on provincial English life, Oadby is lovely, though it is essentially in Leicester so make of that what you will. I'm curious, as Boro's good run has continued - they now sit top of the Conference by 2 points over Cambridge, with a record of 7-0-2 (as the Americans say, think I'm doing it right)

leviramsey Posted September 21, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted September 21, 2013 Villa are down to 27th (12th among the PL) and still rated as having the toughest schedule thus far.
The_Rev
Nuneaton are top of the conference at the moment. They went into liquidation the same year that Portsmouth won the FA Cup (2008) and they might be in the same division (or even ahead of them) next season. Football is crazy sometimes. hogso
Just been checking the Conference table to see how the Boro' sit now - after a pretty stinking run they've won 4 on the bounce and sit fourth in the table. Above them is Kidderminster Harriers, with Joe Lolley joint top scorer with 7 league and cup goals, and top league scorer with 6. Xela
Interesting article in the Independent yesterday about the rise of non league football as fans turn their back on the Premier League http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/football-revolution-as-disillusioned-fans-head-for-the-nonleague-9810932.html

The 'celebration' of footy has got so loved up recently we've actually now got jointly designed and shared banners with other clubs and we compete to see who can stick the most stickers over the other's terrace. Even old rivals like Port Talbot lend us their banners when we have a game and they don't. For anyone interested, there's a pub in London, the Zeitgeist where St Pauli fans gather and watch their games. That can be a good laugh (when they're winning), they also have semi organised trips over to watch them every now and again. I've already got a 2015 trip across diarised - clearly the missus hasn't done her research on where the club is actually based.
The_Rev
A tangential point but it just popped into my head right now, but aren't St Pauli seen as a bit of a joke figure by a lot of fans, especially in Germany? They have successfully managed to turn their left wing/socialist image into quite a viable financial asset because they realised there is a huge number of white middle class people out there who will basically support the club as a fashion statement and they are quite prepared to cash in on that. Xela
Couple of weeks late... Sutton Coldfield Town FC got promotion to the Northern Premier league. Only a couple of rungs down from the conference.
Xela
Thread resurrection! Been to a few non league games recently and really enjoying it. In the last few weeks been to Alfreton Town, Solihull Moors (Stefan Moore still turns out for them!) and Kidderminster Harriers (to see Worcester City) and today went to Broadhurst Park, the home of FC United of Manchester. My mate is a big fan and tend to tag along a fair bit but really enjoy it. Went to the football museum in Manchester first, then some food in the Print Works before the short drive to Moston, where the ground is. £9 to get in, pints less than £3 and a good game... no diving, no feigning injuries and there was a huge downpour so the pitch resembled a mud bath, some cracking sliding tackles going in! It was a local derby against Chorley and finished 2-0 to FC United. The crowd - a record, 4,150. Quite staggering for a team lower than the Conference. Got a few more games lined up this season Edited March 26, 2016 by Xela
