trekka Posted October 28, 2011 VT Supporter Share Posted October 28, 2011 Anyone tried this? Sorry if there has already been a thread posted elsewhere but I tried this last night and I was really impressed. I was able to load up lots of games more or less instantly without installing (on the free trials) and I think it could be a winner. It seems to work like a virtual client, i.e. you're viewing an image of what's happening on the server. I'm impressed because I was playing Dirt3 in full screen with really good graphics on my old laptop (which struggles with C&C!). You can apparently also buy a console which plugs into your tv (which comes with an Xbox 360 style joypad) but you can also shove in your ps3 joypad to your pc (with the right drivers). IainG
It is, quite simply, baffling. I was very sceptical but got sent the console to play with and it blew me away. My write-up is here if you're interested in reading more...
briggaman
I remember this being talked about as the next big thing a few years ago in magazines and on various gaming sites. Looks like it could finally be set to take off and I shall be keeping a close eye on it.

AVFCforever1991
Look like a good idea, but not sure its sustainable.
limpid Posted August 18, 2012 Administrator Share Posted August 18, 2012 I still think this model will be the future of gaming. It's much more efficient to have the processing centralised, not to mention that if all you need is a viewer, the entry point is much lower for players. It's time is not yet. PompeyVillan
How/why is it dead?
briggaman
It turns out that it's actually been acquired now, so it isn't dead afterall. Update 2: We've received a statement from OnLive that confirms the company and its assets have been acquired. OnLive will continue operation under its new company, and a "large percentage of OnLive Inc.'s staff" will be rehired. OnLive's statement is as follows: We can now confirm that the assets of OnLive, Inc. have been acquired into a newly-formed company and is backed by substantial funding, and which will continue to operate the OnLive Game and Desktop services, as well as support all of OnLive's apps and devices, as well as game, productivity and enterprise partnerships. The new company is hiring a large percentage of OnLive, Inc.'s staff across all departments and plans to continue to hire substantially more people, including OnLive employees. All previously announced products and services, including those in the works, will continue and there is no expected interruption of any OnLive services. We apologize that we were unable to comment on this transaction until it completed, and were limited to reporting on news related to OnLive's businesses. Now that the transaction is complete, we are able to make this statement. Update: Reports are surfacing that the popular cloud gaming console OnLive has filed for bankruptcy and has laid off their staff, but will continue operating. We reached out to OnLive, but were told they don't respond to rumors, regardless of what they are. When asked if games would still be available and playable in coming weeks, we were told by OnLive PR that "Of course the games will be available." OnLive has neither confirmed nor denied whether their employees have been laid off, but have stated that OnLive will continue to operate.
Chindie Posted August 18, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted August 18, 2012 Suffice to say that whatever has gone on at OnLive isn't good. they appear to have quietly been in serious trouble, and subsequently look like they agreed some deal with... someone... to be bought out, but seem to have also agreed that part of that transaction would involve culling the staff and then rehiring some. I'm still not convinced OnLive will live long term, which I've always thought.
davemk39
i early adapted onlive and thought it was excellent. i think this is the future providing internet speeds are high enough.
davemk39
onlive is now in the hands of different ppl now. there have been a few changes, which are for the better. they still have the playpack. £6.95/ month unlimited access to any of 250 titles. the biggest change is cloudlift. £4.95/ month cloudlift links your onlive account to your steam account onlive shows what compatible steam games there are. buy a game in the steam sales, link it to onlive and play it anywhere. you then save to your steam cloud to be able to carry on from a different device. both playpack/cloudlift bundle costs £8.95/ month so theres a saving to be had. onlive are releasing games more frequently to playpack and cloudlift. shadow of mordor came out literally on release day. I think its good value and cloud gaming is the future now. try it out they do 7 days free.
