NeilS
Yeah I saw Watford mentioned as a possible destination. Sounds ok to me, that is what the top teams have done in the past when buying in players mid way through a season, who aren't going to be ready for the first team this season. dudevillaisnice
Warnock is terrible, Stevens can't be any worse surely.. shouldn't be going out on loan. It's a joke if Warnock keeps his place against Wolves, he should be dropped asap.
VillaAlex
Warnock is shit but it would be crazy to throw in Stevens this early, absolutley crazy. He's not ready yet and if he had a bad game it could destroy his confidence, thats the reason most young players are held back for so long. markavfc40
loan is a great idea, he needs to get up to scratch with English game as Irish league is nowhere near as fast Spot on. There is no way he will be ready to step up to the Premier League any time soon and certainly not this season. A few months out on loan at Championship level will do him the world of good. chips'ngravy
Can't be any great shakes. Don't think he's even made the bench yet. What was the point of signing him?
P3te
Can't be any great shakes. Don't think he's even made the bench yet. What was the point of signing him? id say its more to do with the fact that, had he come into the team, he'd have been playing for more than 12 months straight. the irish league is a summer league, it doesnt start in august like england. he started preseason for "this" season back in january or february of 2011

It's not like he was going to be first choice anyway. To not be anywhere near a first team decimated by injuries 4 months after signing suggests he's not good enough. BOF Posted April 30, 2012 Moderator Share Posted April 30, 2012 Can't be any great shakes. Don't think he's even made the bench yet. What was the point of signing him?Yes he did make the bench. He was on the bench for the Liverpool game on the 7th of this month. He's only 21. He was brought over from the Irish League as a prospect and he has done well in the reserves. So you might see more of him next season, or you might not. Either way it was worthwhile because of what he might (still) turn out to be. It's harsh criticising the club for rolling the dice on a potential bargain.
SikhInTrinity
Can I just ask did James McClean come from the same league?

SikhInTrinity
So whats all this crap about the league is slower rubbish. Quite a few players have come over, pretty sure Reading snapped up a few like Doyle, Long, Hunt brothers. Lets give the kid a chance, give him a pre-season and hopefully he can outshine McLean who is an outstanding prospect!
AVFCforever1991
because the Irish league is really underrated. Plus they have a really great work ethic.
BOF Posted April 30, 2012 Moderator Share Posted April 30, 2012 It's like most minor leagues. It has gems but the fall-off in quality is marked. So it's harder to judge whether someone is quality or whether it's because they're playing against dross on any given day. McClean being a very good example. You'd think with what we know now, that most of the PL would've been over clamouring for his signature long before Sunderland got it. So as much as we might say "why didn't we buy McClean instead of Stevens", you've gotta remember there's 18 other Premier League sides that didn't buy him either. Enda
Steve Staunton, too. As mentioned, in the last five or ten years there's been Kevin Doyle, James McClean, Seamus Coleman, etc. Maybe Enda will be like them and turn out to be a ~£10m player, maybe not. But seeing as signing him cost only as much as employing Emile Heskey for a month, it wasn't a bad gamble.
