I wonder if you took the minds and knowledge of all VTers, where our overlapping knowledge would end?

sorta related , but Paddy (i think) started a thread once to see if collectively VT had visited every country in the world   .. I don' think we had , but we were pretty darn close

the problem with a lot of VT knowledge is it invariably gathered via Twitter  , so we'd be more like Alan Davies on QI with virtual klaxons going off constantly  ..

If we discount grime and Hip Hop as they don't belong in the category anyway , i reckon we'd have everything covered musically though

Does anybody else really dislike mobile phones?

Yep. I got a new one the other day. Decided not to put a single app on it other than WhatsApp. I intend to use it for making and receiving calls and sending the occasional message.

Unfortunately, I still have one for work which is the bane of my life. Pings all the time from colleagues who expect an immediate answer no matter the hour.

It's too controlling for me. I need it to work, I need it for everything now to be fair. Such a quick transition to this over the last 15 years, and presumably you cant undo it.

It would be a disaster.  You couldn't even trust that mind to dress itself properly, feed itself properly or even wipe it's arse.  And it would certainly have piss all down it's leg.   And probably vote Lib Dem.

Harsh to blame the phone for that really. Yes I know the phone provides the ability to receive them, but that problem is with your job and colleagues. Unless you're on-call I'd be muting whatever chats they are. From my own perspective, more often than not I am on-call 24/5, and I still turn my internet off overnight so as to stop random app notifications pinging me at 4am, but it also means if work want me they must ring me instead of whatsapp. No casual rolling of grenades in my general direction texting me out of hours.

Humanities knowledge ends on the peripheries of science, be it Astronomy or solving diseases.

But I wonder what the collective VT mind would know and what it wouldn't know.  We all have different interests and our knowledge spans probably 50/60 years worth of living.  I wonder what things we don't know, which we probably should.

We'd still need to find someone who was on expert on dinosaurs.

I wouldn't say dislike, but i'm not a massive fan of them. I acknowledge their usefulness in a lot of situations but I feel as though I'm always contactable and that annoys me.

I was happy with the Nokia 3310 in the early 00s!

Only have 2 apps on it though - WhatsApp (necessary evil) and Spotify (vital for streaming to my car an being my music player on the train)

@choffer - can't you turn your work phone off when you finish for the day. I do sometimes, although its never too bad. An occasional email comes through or maybe a Teams message, but none are time critical.

I totally could but when things fall over and you’re in charge of technology, it kinda comes with the territory.

Having never used one, having no plans to ever use one and them seemingly being the accidental arson weapon of choice for entitled dumb dumbs is it not time to outright ban the portable/disposable barbecue?

I mean, I’d ban all barbecues completely tbh for personal use as they are just **** annoying all round but I’m happy just to stick to the stupid dangerous disposable ones for now.

Has @mjmooney read The Satanic Verses and what does he think of it?

Timely. I've read Midnight's Children (the 'Booker of Bookers' with good reason), Shame, and The Moor's Last Sigh, but funnily enough, not TSV. I bought it in hardback when it was first published, Mrs M read it (gave it the thumbs up), but I never got around to it. A couple of days ago I finished Vikram Seth's 'An Equal Music', so was looking around for my next read - started TSV yesterday.

Drug taking scenes in movies, in particular snorting coke through a rolled up banknote.

I know it ain't really coke, more like talc or powdered sugar but where does it go ? Is there a block or filter in the banknote ? I mean, I can see it disappearing up the "straw" but surely it doesn't actually go up the actor's nose ?

It goes up the nose mostly (assume what the shot requires) and safe substitutes are used such as a vitamin B powder, powdered lactose or inositol.

Have just watched the channel 4 doc on former porn star Ron Jeremy, currently in prison awaiting trial on various sexual assault charges.

I often wondered how or why he was so successful. Long, straggly hair, pot bellied, hairy body, not exactly blessed with model looks.....I mean, was he cast so often that even the ugly joe public thought he could pull and sleep with pretty women ? I am sure most of his female co stars switched off their minds and thought of the money.

OK, so he was packing like a race horse but even in his heyday he looked pretty gross.
