Merthyr is never going to rival Barry Island for culture and intellectual residents,

Merthyr has got a statue of a boxer and an abandoned nightclub where they were growing weed  ( maybe still are)

What does Barry Island have to offer ?

Corby is an utter shithole, a combination of old steelworks and associated industrial estates and a horrific town centre, populated mostly by violent Rangers and Celtic fans. It's a 9.5/10 on the horrible scale.

I was going to mention Corby as one of the worst places in the UK as well. Went to a non league game there... had a pre match bite to eat in a local pub and there was a game on. Think it was Rangers on Sky Sports. Loads of people in Rangers shirts, which baffled me!

What shirt were you expecting Rangers fans to be wearing ? :)

I have a few to add to your shortlist, Corby, Coalville, Rugby, and Grimsby. Just all about, as you say, meh.

Due to my non league travels, i can add:

Oldham, Boston Gainsborough, the aforementioned Corby (yuk) and Alfreton, which was also grim.

Locally, I would have to say Tamworth, if we're talking town centres. It kind of died once Ventura Park opened.

I refer you to my previous answer to Seat68 on this page :)

Funny :)

What I meant was that I never expected to see how many of them in a Hungry Horse in Corby! :D

On Wikipedia, what picture is used to show Corby, to sell it to the world

Spoiler

The architectural highlight it seems!

Nah I can't do that kind of thing I get bored too easy

I reckon I've had some embarrassing sized meals after work though, take home whatevers left... Thats a chips, 2 scallops, tray of kebab meat, fish, sausage and a pie

Crazy thing was I never put weight on as a 15 to 19 year old at the chippy - then I went to work at the cookie factory at 20 and it was instant, hit me hard and fast, that was quality control, baking a cookie from each batch and weighing measuring them etc some days I had 80 cookies sat on my desk staring at me, best there was 10kg of jelly beans in about a week, or between 2 of us a box of 46 Krispy Kreme donuts in an afternoon for research purposes... And you know what they were the defrostable ones  20 years ago and the report we wrote slated them, they were shit

Agree on Corby. By the way, it’s absolutely full of Wegies, something to do with old steelworks, I think, and loads of ‘wegians moving there to work before War2

So it’s royalist, full of Vickie Pollards, Tory clearings in the woods, and fighty men and knackered old coaches. Sounds…interesting. You sell it well.

that’s what it’s like where I live ,too.

I was trying to sell it to @tonyh29

He’s not going to want to know about the tidal reach, the roman settlement, steam trains, St Baruc’s Church, the fossils, the geography, or the allotments. He’s gonna be all about the royals and found hedge porn.

It’s so posh where I live hedge porn is on an iPad  :)

I grew up with a train loving dad so one of our family holidays evolved around that scrapyard and probably that amusement arcade unless they’ve opened new ones since 1980

Still the same arcades. I’ve spent many an hour in Nessa’s Slots.

So far, we’ve had suggestions/mentions of -

Alfreton, Barry Island, Basingstoke, Blackpool, Boston, Coalville, Corby, East Kilbride, Gainsborough, Grimsby, Ipswich, Merthyr, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Oldham, Rugby, Southampton, Stamford, Stow-on-the-Wold, Swindon and Tamworth.

And out of all those, I think I’ve only been to Blackpool and Southampton - and I’m not 100% sure about Southampton (caught the ferry to Isle of Wight, can’t recall where from).

I shall consider myself reasonably fortunate.

Johnny Owen was an absolute local hero

Everyone knew Johnny from miles around, you'd see him out training, every day, running over mountains, he used to run up and down the Heads of the Valley Road, I even saw him once running along the road from Merthyr to Brecon and when he was finished in Brecon, he bought an ice cream and waited for his trainer to come and give him a lift home. He was like a like a living comic book character out of the VIctor Comic

Portsmouth and Lymington are quicker to the Isle of Wight than Southampton IIRC

When I was a kid, we always used to go from Lymington as my Dad preferred the drive there - more scenic and through the New Forest.

The best stuff was gone by the 80s, in the early 70s there were some great trains in that yard and they'd really stopped scrapping them as they realised they were more valuable to sell to preservation than the bare metal.

I posted on here a few months back about how I'd drag my granddad around there on a day out instead of going to the Fun Fair, climbing up into the cabs of the loco's, it really was a very magical place
