tonyh29
The only neologism I can think of which got the language buffs in a bit of a lather is 'television'. They thought that the fact that 'tele' is from the Greek and 'vision' is from the Latin made it a rather crude and vulgar coinage. That and pluralising octopus to anything other than octipodes. Octopus'ssssssss surely ?

blandy Posted April 16, 2015 Moderator Share Posted April 16, 2015 I wonder about the times, and they happen maybe once every ten days or so when, while awaking from a night's sleep but not fully awake, I have moments of incredible clarity of thought, usually about some major event, a historical episode or political situation. A clarity of thought far clearer than any fully awake state of mind could produce, for some reason. Does this happen to anyone else? Yes I have these. Usually after I sleep at a reasonable time as well. They don't last for long but there's about ten minutes of clarity. This happens to me, but not in a partially awake state. It just sometimes happens, kind of out of the blue. It comes on in the same way that a daydream does, but instead of meandering thoughts about kestrels or winter hill (things I can see out the window) I get the thing you describe - the crystal pure, completely solitary (as in the absence of any other thoughts, or mind activity) vision of exactly how something is, or what it is. It's like normally my brain has different levels, like lasagne, and each one is doing something, but occasionally all the strata line up and do the same thing at the same time. I love it when it happens, it's ace.
lapal_fan
Does anyone else get sudden clarity of how disgusting you are when in the immediate aftermath of masturbation? Like, "Seriously, wtf am i doing? Why did I do it over shark porn.. I need to seriously re-evaluate my life." - Is that what you mean Blandy? I love it when it happens, it's ace. Satori (悟り?) (Chinese: 悟; pinyin: wù; Korean: 오 o; Vietnamese: ngộ) is a Japanese Buddhist term for awakening, "comprehension; understanding". It is derived from the Japanese verb satoru. In the Zen Buddhist tradition, satori refers to the experience of kenshō, "seeing into one's true nature". Ken means "seeing," shōmeans "nature" or "essence." Wikipedia Edited April 16, 2015 by mjmooney
mjmooney Posted April 16, 2015 Author VT Supporter Share Posted April 16, 2015 Why is Texas considered to be part of the American West? It's clearly in the east!
maqroll
I don't consider it to be in the eastern US. Nor does the map. It's central. Far western Texas could be considered "The West". It had all the hallmarks of it, cattle, and cowboys and Comanches...

Of course, I get it that 'The West' is an historical/cultural thing, but even so, the idea that a state with a coast on the Gulf is 'western' still amuses me. colhint
Isn't it the States governed by The Brits and Dutch were called the East and The rest was the West. In fact The rest was claimed by France and So the Largest state used to be Louisiana After Louis the something or other
maqroll
Texas is south central, definitely not southeast. It's easternmost point is still west of the Mississippi river. And it's western panhandle juts hallway across the southern border of New Mexico. I'd classify Texas more south-central/southwest.

Is this a similar scenario to 'the north' being everything above the M4? I imagine there are New Yorkers that would consider the wild west starts around about Ohio. PriceyDownunder
Why are laundry baskets oval shaped? It makes no sense... Considering most clothes are folded into a rectangular shape, it serves no purpose, and would have no advantage over a rectangular shaped basket...
