Designer1 Posted September 6, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted September 6, 2010 One series of movies I've just never been able to get into. I would say the only two I've had any time for were Goldfinger and Living Daylights. Although, I remember owning one of these when I was a nipper... Glarmorgan
Moore, Connery first. Well, first, because Moore was the first Bond I saw as I grew up in the 80's. More than that, I liked the fact that while these two were quite efficient as 007, they were full with sarcasm and despite being efficient killing machines, they still knew to enjoy life. The latter ones became too sensitive, too caring towards women and, in general, too grim for my taste. Craig almost never smiles. It's like he's going through some rough times at home or something, while Connery could see his lover covered in gold and still go on as nothing happened. For me 007 is not just another secret agent. He is the slickest secret agent ever! P.S. Loved Lazenby and I think "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is one of the best Bond films ever made. soprano
Connery is best for me then Moore. Moore did the tongue in cheek thing really well and I found it clever that his autobiography was called "My word is my Bond" even if it wasn't his idea. granville
Early Connery was the best (ie. early 60s not 70s) until Daniel Craig. I can't quite give a definitive reason why, them two just 'move' like i think Bond should.

Jon
Craig is too cold he's a highly trained killer , would you like him to wear a clown outift and tell jokes ? :-) exactly Tone. precisely the reason why he is the best Bond, for me. The closest portrayal to the book, and captures the esence of teh cold killer that Bond actually is. If you want a bond like Moore, go and watch Austin Powers. Pelle
The first Bond films I saw was The spy who loved me and For your eyes only, so for me Moore was Bond. Those two are btw still two of the 5 best Bond films IMO. Then I read a fair few of the books and when I saw Casino Royale I felt that this was the real Bond. The Bond Fleming wrote about, the one he wanted it to be. So for me Craig wins it easily. And Casino Royale is my absolute favourite now.

BOF Posted September 7, 2010 Moderator Share Posted September 7, 2010 Between Connery & Craig for me. Just went for Craig as he somehow comes across as more authentic and I believe he's closer to what Fleming originally envisaged.
Clarry
Looks wise, Fleming said Bond looked like the singer Hoagy Carmichael. Google image it, I can't be botherd with it!
leviramsey Posted September 7, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted September 7, 2010 Either Dalton or Brosnan IMO have the best resemblance to the literary character. As originally written, Bond is English middle/upper-middle class (though Fleming was sufficiently appreciative of Connery's performance to change it to half-Scottish). Dalton or Craig come the closest to this... Dalton gets the look and is half-English (he's not really Welsh)... Craig has the upbringing and background (though he's more Welsh than Dalton) but doesn't by any stretch have the look. Of course, that said, Fleming did recommend Roger Moore (pre-Saint) over Connery to the producers.
maqroll
I always liked Moore as Bond, even if a couple of those films were absolute garbage. "A View to a Kill" remains my favorite Bond film. I know the Craig Bond is supposed to be closer to the book Bond, but to me, the Bond persona was the one that Connery and Moore portrayed, the cheeky ladies man, debonair and cocky, whereas Craig has little of the charisma of Connery or Moore, and as a consequence turns the character into a sort of hybrid action figure, part Bond, part Bourne, part Transporter....in other words, nothing special. Brosnan comes in 3rd for me, all the others don't even come close to Connery and Moore.
Clarry
Bond was half Scottish/half Swiss. The wiki atricle stirred the memory of years ago the James Bond newspaper strip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bond

Interesting that you mention a few garbage ones for Moore, but you point to 'A View to a Kill' as your favorite. Which were garbage for you? Roger Moore pointed to that film as the worst Bond film he did and thinks he should have retired earlier. I think it just about passes as ok. My least favorite was probably 'For Your Eyes Only'. I kinda of got off Bond films after Moore retired. I saw Bond as a pensioner and never really brought into the newer films. I'd probably have Connery as my slight favorite. But i certainly enjoyed what Moore brought to the Bond films. And my favorite Bond film? Probably OHMSS which starred neither of them!
mjmooney Posted September 18, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted September 18, 2010 This thread has just made me realise that Never Say Never Again was not a "canon" Bond film. Very strange.Indeed. And it was a remake of Thunderball, too. My vote? David Niven. Nah, just kidding. Connery by a country mile. Craig in second place. Sure, Roger Moore was Fleming's first choice, but what the hell did he know? Moore sucked dick as Bond (he was just fine as The Saint and Bo Maverick, though!)
