Popular Post Stevo985 Posted March 3, 2013 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted March 3, 2013 More football related cheering up. This morning I had to get up at 8am, after an incredibly heavy night on the town, and drag myself to Coventry to play football in the freezing cold, incredibly hungover. I couldn't think of anything I wanted to do less. Little did I know it would turn out to be probably the greatest game of football I've ever played. I play in goal on a Sunday, and we were playing the same team we played last week, who gave us a 5-1 tonking. Not this week though! I played a bit of a stormer, if I do say so myself. We went 1-0 down early on but I kept us in it with some decent saves. Then we conceded a penalty. NO GOAL FOR YOU I screamed (I didn't really scream) as I hurled myself to the right and pushed the penalty away. Still 1-0 We equalised, they went ahead again, 2-1. Then came a flash point, a ball over the top towards our striker, their keeper came rushing out tried to head it but couldn't resist palming it away with his hand, outside the box. Surely a red card? Nope, the ref unbelievably just booked him. We equalised shortly after, then our striker got put through again, it was 2-2, this could win it, this time the keeper brought him down. Penalty, the ref was tellingly quick to send the keeper off on this occassion. A penalty to lead the game with 8 minutes left, but.... we **** missed it. But we were now playing against 10, surely we could win it from here? Nope, it wasn't to be, they broke down the right, crossed it in and hammered home what must surely be the winner, 3-2 with barely 5 minutes left. Then came the highlight of my goalkeeping career to date. A minute and a half left, we win a corner. No-one needed to prompt me, I was already striding forward into the oppositions half, then their penalty area. We take the corner. "**** me", I thought. "This is actually coming straight at me". I rose like a salmon "Don't **** this up" I thought as I thrust my head towards the ball. BOOM!!!! It connected. Bullet header, opposition keeper planted, nothing but net. I'd **** scored from a corner whilst playing as a goalkeeper, to save a point in the last minute. The stuff dreams are made of. Chilavert, Schmeichel, Higuita, Ceni, Campos, Glass, Stephenson. I'll probably retire now because it won't get any better than that.
PompeyVillan
Scoring a header from a corner is particularly satisfying. When you get your head on it, you're looking at where you want it to go when you make the connection, and then if the connection is true you get the glory of watching it go exactly where you wanted it to, ripple the net and then moments later savour the look of exasperation on their 'keeper's face. I do enjoy a good headed goal.
Stevo985 Posted March 3, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) The ball we were playing with was over inflated as well. It was annoying me as it was so hard that I couldn't get my goal kicks right. But it was perfect for a header like that. There was nothing stopping that. I still can't quite believe it to be honest. That probably sounds a bit stupid but I've been so chuffed about it all day. I've scored before when I've played outfield for them a bunch of times, I've even scored from in goal before (huge punt upfield) but never in that scenario. It's never been that satisfying. It was absolutely **** glorious. Edited March 3, 2013 by Stevo985

Genie
Awesome Stevo, I've watched a lot of Sunday Morning footy over the years (sadly several dislocations of the knee have meant I'm resigned to watching) and its incredible just how many penalty's get missed. Its well over 50%.
Stevo985 Posted March 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 4, 2013 Yep, we missed one in the same game as well I personally have faced probably 15 penalties in the past 3 seasons and I think I've only let in 3 or 4. And I don't put that down to me being amazing (although I am ), it's because I'd say 80% of penalty takers at this level do something really stupid. They try and "give you the eyes" by deliberately staring at a point in the goal as if to say "that's where I'm going to put it". Obviously, that's NOT where they're going to put it so I just dive the other way. If I'm facing a penalty and the taker is looking to my left or right I immediately know I've got a very good chance of saving it by just diving the other way. So advice for any keepers facing penalties, if a taker looks in one direction, that's most likely not where he's going to put it. And advice for anyone taking them, the best thing you can do is just look at the ball. Don't look at the goal. Your eyes give everything away. Genie
yes, a huge amount manage to miss the target too (usually by trying to place it in the top corner). Funny to watch though.
Stevo985 Posted March 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 4, 2013 Not that I can talk. I've taken one penalty for our team, in a shoot out, and I John Carew'd it into orbit.
CrackpotForeigner
Pardon my interruption with that pic, well done Stevo. Scored a try in a rugby game in similar (but not quite so good) circumstances, felt like a god.

Stevo985 Posted March 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 4, 2013 Sounds like you'd fit right in on our team. No-one can head the ball (apart from me it would appear) and it frustrates the hell out of me. We're probably the only team in the country who concede more form corners and crosses than Aston Villa. mjmooney Posted March 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted March 4, 2013 Well I haven't played for about 15 years, but I was probably one of the worst footballers ever. What I could do: Run up and down the touchline, fairly quickly, without tiring, for 90 minutes. VERY occasionally, put an decent cross in. What I couldn't do: Anything else. Couldn't pass, couldn't shoot, couldn't trap a ball, couldn't tackle, couldn't head. Which is ironic, given that in his youth my dad was a semi-pro footballer. GarethRDR
So I'm doing our company website's analytics for the monthly report (zzzzzzzzz) when I noticed a trend in Q3 and Q4 of last year. I've decided to call it the Batman Trend.
