mjmooney Posted February 18, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted February 18, 2019 Just found out there's a second series of Das Boot. Only on Sky though, hope it makes it to BBC, Prime or Netflix.

From what I understand is was not great, but I also think it suffers because S1 set the bar so high that nothing could possibly live up to it. S3 is a big step in the right direction. This. If S1 was 10/10, S2 was a 7. It wasn’t awful, it just got nowhere near the quality of the first - hence the backlash. S3 is an 8/8.5 for me so far.

wazzap24
I can’t believe it took me so long to discover the absolute gem that is ‘This Country’. It’s brilliant

We have finally decided to give Peaky Blinders a go, to be fair it's pretty decent so far (watched 5 episodes yesterday). Small Heath really hasn't changed much I've seen the first two episodes but never really got into it. It wasn't bad, though, and I will give it another go. No, it hasn't, has it? Same with their keeper obviously, going to the pub before games. But then again, so would I if I played for that shite.
wazzap24
Peaky Blinders is absolutely brilliant and gets better and better as it goes. Top quality stuff, one of the best things the BBC has done in ages.
Mark Albrighton Posted February 18, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted February 18, 2019 I found myself getting just a bit restless with Peaky Blinders when i last watched it. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s still a good watch, but I’m just finding it a little bit samey now. The ubiquitous tie in products I keep seeing, official or otherwise don’t help. When I watch it I find my mind wandering to possible drinking game rules - drink when one of the characters is walking through a moodily lit factory or down a street in slow motion; whenever Arthur shouts “by order of the peaky ****in’ blinders!!”; when one of Tommy’s family members calls him by his full name for whatever reason.... I’ll tune in to the next series, but I’m not as fussed about it as I once was.
mjmooney Posted February 18, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted February 18, 2019 I'm considering giving Peaky Blinders another go. I read that due to copyright Netflix (?) has had to drop some of the music originally on the soundtrack. If that means they've taken away the rock stuff I'll be more interested, as that was what killed it for me when I first watched episode 1. Modern music in period dramas is one of my bêtes noirs. Agreed that the rock music felt a bit off in that kind of show. But also,I'm not much for maffia films/series. I tried Sopranos but thought Sopornos was better. Godfather is good, The Untouchables also good, but apart from those I have never seen much in that genre that really got me.
villa4europe
i think its too short leaving it feeling rushed, series 3 took a mistep because it had a convoluted plot with some poorly explained history, there are still some off them that cannot do the accent and i think its starting to get the problem that its becoming too isolated as a series, needs to develop a good antagonist again that sticks around which based on the new cast i'm not sure we're getting but its still incredible, my favourite English show on TV and i love the use of music, cant remember which episode it was last season but it opened with Foals Snake Oil whilst showing them cracking some skulls, i'll take that all day, i also loved the piece they used for the trailer last year that trailer brings back some good memories, brilliant TV

sne
Blasting through Gomorrah has made me remember another Italian mafia (or police) series I watched on telly when I was a kid during the late 80's La Piovra (Bläckfisken in Swedish). It was really, really good from what I remember even thou the details are a bit hazy. It was divided into mini-series with seasons coming a few years apart and I've not seen the follow up series they made after S4. But the first 4 all have 8.5 or higher on IMDB fwiw. No. It was bad in comparison to the first one. But I think a lot of people were overcritical. Don't get me wrong it's not great, and if you decide to skip it and go straight to season 3 you won't exactly be missing out on gold. But it's not the absolute shite some people were saying it was. It was just overcomplicated

Tried recommending it to friends and family but its a hard sell, especially with the subs. Yep. Usually I describe the show and people are saying "wow that sounds brilliant. I'll definitely watch it". Then I drop in that it's in Italian and subtitled and they totally lose interest. FWIW my old director who was Italian said even she had to use subtitles watching Gomorrah because the dialect and accents were so strong.

villa4europe
watched just another immigrant romesh ranganathan seems to be flavour of the month right now, so does sending comedians abroad with their family, its ok, not sure his deadpan nature carries through all the time, he's not particularly witty he's one of these funny because he's so dour types, most of it is blatantly set up too which spoils it and its never good to have a comedy show where the comedian isnt the funniest person on it
