The New Condem Government

Benefits Street on channel 4, helping perpetuate the image of unemployed/benefit scroungers by focusing on some really dysfunctional individuals. The media brainwash continues. All part of the big project.

I'm watching it and my first thought was that it is a real shame for those people on benefits desperately trying to find work as in some peoples eyes they will be tarred with the same brush as this mob.

Of those that claim benefits there will of course be some taking the piss but I'd imagine it would be a small minority.

Ideal timing when Osborne announces that future defecit reduction should be based on reducing social security payments (by binning stuff for under 25s and further reductions on HB - btw, George, there's only so much that you can bleed that stone without creating a problem in both the social and private rented sector).

Anyway, sounds like the IFS got it close to bloody spot on in the last year or two with their forecasts for gov't tax and spend for the election year and beyond.

What about the tens of billions of corporate tax avoidance? The tens of billions of wealthy tax doggers? What of the low paying bosses + private landlords scrounging with low pay and rent subsidies? When is that programme going to be made? Tens of billions scrounged and avoided, they're the real 'problem people'.

In no other official body could they be so wishy washy about what they're looking for, as Ofsted are. It changes yearly. This year, the buzz word is progress. Last year it was differentiation. Next year it'll be AFL.

And don't even get me started on 'progress'. They won't even explain what they mean by it.

What about the wasted money being spent on the never ending war on drugs?

They should at least stop treating drug problems on the NHS. If you're stupid enough to turn to drugs, that's your problem, not the tax payer's.

That is a very shallow, right wing attitude to take, Ajax. Things are rarely that black and white.

Osborne is planning to cut a further £25bn from government spending, which we are led to believe is a lot but it is only 3.5% of the £720bn the government spends of other people's money.

With a deficit of £108bn a year it would seem that cuts are necessary, which leaves the question as to where those cuts should be made.

The cost of benefits represents the biggest portion of what the government spends (£220bn) but the choice of target does seem cowardly to say the least.

Where would you cut?

Defence £40bn

Education £97bn

Transport £21bn

Public Order £31bn

Health £137bn

Industry, Agriculture & skills training £16bn

Housing & Environment £23bn

Debt interest £51bn

Personal Social Services £31bn

Social protection (benefits & pensions etc) £220bn

Overseas aid, culture and sport £53bn

Or which taxes would you increase?

Business rates £27bn

VAT £103bn

Corporation tax £39bn

Excise duty £47bn

National Insurance £107bn

Council tax £27bn

Income Tax £155bn

Vehicle licence, road fuel tax and stamp duty etc £107bn
