thetrees
The house just voted to stop the badger cull. Government response? They're going to carry on regardless. That's our democracy at work. I'm not being funny, but other than farmers, (and, presumably the badgers), who cares? How does that rank on the scale of the country's immediate problems? I think that you will find that to certain elements of our society badgers and foxes are a hell of a lot more important than managing the economy. You mean tories? They seem to think removing the ban on Fox hunting should be a priority. To be fair i hadn't heard of that. I just remember that this seemed to be the only policy of the first 5 years of Labour government, a petty thing that the majority of the country couldn't give a shit about. All it was about was a few chips on their shoulder socialists trying to get one over on a few chinless wonders. Irrelevant then and irrelevant now.

thetrees
RIP Tony Benn. Would have made a fine Prime Minister given the chance. Clearly you weren't around in the 70s. Radicals do not make 'fine Prime Ministers', and this country would have been a bigger mess than under the moderate James Callaghan. The Soviet Union would probably still be in existence as well! Then again after seeing what the 'freeing' of russia has created now maybe the old CCCP was something that could have stayed around ;-)

Xann
The spread of misery and poverty needs to be stopped. I suggest we gas this sett in London. With Tony Benn gone, there's one less reason not to do it.

With Tony Benn gone, there's one less reason not to do it. That's a heck of a piece of prime real estate. You do wonder, if that could be sold off and a modern efficient version built within the M42 that included hostel rooms so they didn't have to go looking for hotels when they work late. TrentVilla Posted March 14, 2014 Moderator Share Posted March 14, 2014 I get stuff being built within the M25 but I'm struggling with the concept of building within the M42 given its a straight road
chrisp65
yeah yeah, central reservation I meant! no my apologies, sat in Bromsgrove I always think of Brum as 'inside' the M42 perhaps I meant in or around the notional M5 / M42 Birmingham area with train and road links but space for a big building with a Premier Inn. Perhaps Detroitwich?

Whether hunting the fox or anything else, it definitely seems to be about asserting dominion over the land and the ancient rights which come with the status of aristocrats. It seems no coincidence that the Royal family, while maintaining a Green public image, always have the need to go shoot something, as a demonstration of their royal status, in a watered down symbolic act of their divine-right. The fact that even the latest generation still feel the need to do it, seems to indicate that it is some kind of ancient rite, to do with Kingliness.
