Gove is an excellent speaker despite being a tosser tbh I think my cat could make Will Self look a fool .. but yes as was discussed in this thread at the time Gove did a decent job on QT and does handle himself pretty well .... I guess the argument would be that there is more to being the Secretary of State for Education than being good on QT though .....
coda
Gove isn't some posh boy , he won a scholarship and arguably DID get there by himself the rest of it is a matter of discussion of course .....The commie even went on strike once.
Xela
Surely this help to buy scheme that has been introduced is only going to push house prices up further with the increased demand thus making the 5% deposit in a few years the same as paying 10% now???...or am I missing something??? I actually voted for this tory government. Now I can see why my relatives hated them so much when I was a kid when they was last in power. They really only care about the rich don't they. Never ever will vote for them again. Id vote labour but can you really have a wet flannel like Ed in charge. It would be embarrassing. The energy company crap he has a hard on for that he keeps banging on about is hardly a vote winner. His brother would have been better. Shoot me down but easily the most charismatic leader is farage. He actually talks about issues the normal general public are concerned about like immigration, the EU, the nhs. But would I vote ukip...no. They will just be another tory government. Sod the working class, give it to the rich. Their is NO ONE to vote for. I'm never voting again The help to buy scheme would have been a brilliant idea IF they had implemented it in conjunction with the biggest housebuilding program since the end of ww2. As it stands.... its won't help the rich.... because mummy and daddy will chuck in a bigger deposit to get a lower repayment rate. The H2B scheme will help only those earning £35k p/a and above.... with squeaky clean credit records and **** all savings who aren't already on the property ladder. In short, virtually noone. Hasn't the H2B scheme already helped loads of people get on the ladder? A lad in the admin function in my office has used it to buy his first place and he's only on about £22k max I would guess, maybe less. House prices are on the way back up and that would have happened with or without the H2B scheme. I think the scheme in principle is a good idea.. anything that helps people on the ladder is surely a good thing.
MakemineVanilla
There is a lot of harsh things said about the present government and a lot of whining about them being only interested in the rich but despite all this, it seems that when you look at the figures of the amount of money they actually hand out to people with children on low incomes, it not only looks like socialism, it actually looks quite generous. A couple with 3 children and an income of around £15k a year will be handed nearly £8k of tax-payers money in the form of working and child tax credits and child benefit. So for doing the same job and even having the luxury of a partner at home who makes no contribution, the person with three children takes home 50% more than the childless person doing the same job. Seems very generous to me.

That's mortgage/rent/council tax/gas,water,electricity and food/cloths for 5 people. Not a lot really is it. Clearly the single person living solely off the 15k is way better off. But he/she doesn't have the luxury of a partner at home who makes no contribution. p.s. Bod above appears to have double counted the WTC. Repeat: All the figures were supplied by the government's own calculator. Based upon 1 partner earning £15300, the other earning nothing, with three kids 3, 7 and 10. I merely multiplied the child benefit and added the numbers provided.
snowychap
Repeat: All the figures were supplied by the government's own calculator. This?Edit:If so, the results from that would suggest you have double counted the WTC.Also I believe they only represent the tax credits for between now and the beginning of April, not for a full year. chrisp65
I can't say I've got strong feelings one way or the other on the badgers, I'm inclined to leave them the furk alone if I'm pushed. But this whole thing has been so poorly handled. I was listening to some govt apologist insisting we had to cull 60% of badgers, when asked how many that was he said he couldn't say, as we didn't know how many there were in total. A properly shocking lack of self awareness, of logical thinking or of basic maths.

thetrees
Free childcare for all. Alternatively, if you can't look after them, don't have them. Why should everyone else pay?
StefanAVFC Posted October 9, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted October 9, 2013 That sort of family would struggle on 23k ph. I share that view slightly, but not for your reasoning. My reasoning is more child-centric. It's not far on children to grow up in poverty. The amount of kids coming into school hungry and/or without proper uniform is crazy these days. Uniform is so cheap as well.
