Cricket: General Chat

Just seen that the Birmingham Mail have made redundant the role of covering Warwickshire for the paper.

Cricket is dying, especially the County/50 over domestic game. Quicker than ever before.

Oh yes I just found it. Brian Halford will be devastated. I think he still covers walsall fc but how bad is it that the local paper not having a journalist to cover Warwickshire...

It really is the final nail in the coffin for County Championship cricket. You are lucky to see 2 or 3 county games a year on Sky and there really just isn't any coverage of it all except BBC covering a few matches of the year on the radio.

Very sad and concerning.

Well that's ******* terrible! I follow Brian on Twitter, and he's bloody great for someone like me, who lives outside the area, to follow what's going on. Am I right in saying he's a Villa an too? I've had some interaction with him about Lambert on Twitter before now.

Just read Ajmal has been suspended for having a dodgy action. Clicky

This will include domestic cricket for the Pears. Toughts about this?

From the BBC...

Saeed Ajmal: Pakistan spinner banned over bowling action

Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal has been suspended by the International Cricket Council for an illegal bowling action.

The 36-year-old off-spinner was reported last month after match officials raised concerns during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Analysis of Ajmal's action revealed that "all his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees" by which the arm is allowed to bend, the ICC said.

Ajmal said he was disappointed, but added: "I know I can correct it."

He is currently the world's top-ranked one-day international bowler.

He also has 178 Test wickets, at an average of 28.10, and is still the leading wicket-taker in the County Championship  this season with 63 in nine matches for Worcestershire, despite not having played for them in almost two months.

"An independent analysis has found the bowling action of Pakistan's off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to be illegal and, as such, the player has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement.

The ECB confirmed to BBC Sport that the ban would also extend to domestic competitions, preventing Ajmal from returning to county cricket.

"We're disappointed for Saeed," said Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale. "He was never reported while playing for Worcester.

"He will now have to go through the remodelling process like other cricketers have had to do before him.

"As regards next season, it's not something to be talked about while he goes through that remodelling process."

Ajmal's action was analysed by an ICC-accredited team of human movement specialists using the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on 25 August.

"The ICC has stopped me from bowling because my elbow is bending beyond the 15 degrees allowed and I know I can correct that," Ajmal told reporters.

"It is very disappointing to know the results of the tests, but I am a fighter and I know what I have to do to get back into international cricket before the World Cup."

The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed it will appeal the suspension.

A spokesman said: "It's a big jolt for us. It's not easy to replace a player like Ajmal who is a match-winner. We will appeal against the ICC decision."

Ajmal, who made his international debut in July 2008, can apply for a re-assessment after he modifies his bowling action.

The ICC has recently taken action against several off-spinners.

Sri Lankan Sachithra Senanayake and New Zealand's Kane Williamson were banned from bowling in July, while Zimbabwe's Prosper Utseya and Bangladesh's Sohag Gazi are currently under investigation.

I know a lot of people are traditional and don't think anybody should be allowed to bowl with a bent arm. I seem to be very much alone in thinking the ICC taking this line of action is doing the game a lot of harm. What they are doing is stopping bowlers from being able to spin the ball both ways. Theres no good leg spinners about.  All we have are finger spinners who are told to bowl at 60 mph, so this will stop young players wanting to bowl spin and we'll be stuck with seamers.....

We're looking at attendances in test cricket at an all time low. Pakistan will come over here in 2016 without their premier player and its going to be a very one-sided contest and I bet it won't sell. The ICC are killing the game.

The cynic would say that now India have a much much larger presence at the ICC that they would want their big rival's star bowler missing for the World Cup.

But like Paul says, test crowds are at an all time low. I mean look how poor some of the attendances were this summer and that against two countries who have relatively large numbers of fans over here. If you take English test crowds out of the equation then you will be lucky to see a ground half around the world.

It's a joke that he has been banned especially with Malinga still 'slinging' the ball instead of bowling properly.

Yeah I see what you're saying Paul. I recall your views about Malinga, and how these rules always seem to be in favour of the batsmen. I really enjoy watching Ajmal bowl (not so much when he's wiping out England), and cricket will be poorer for his absence.
