robby b
It's not the "news story of the day" but it is one of them: the awful, very scary situation in Haiti... the BBC have a report today about the criminal gangs now kidnapping, raping and killing at will. The UN lacked the power and will to intervene in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and now apparently in Haiti too. Will the world ever have some kind of international police that is effective? Partly due to that terrible earthquake, Haiti is a failed state, apparently even more than Venezuela. Its citizens must be terrified, they need the rest of the world to help them somehow. sne
Bit of a Rise of the Planet of the Apes story happening in Sweden where a pack of Chimpanzee led by a supposedly extra intelligent leader named Santino have tried to escape from a park. And for Sweden reasons (best prepared country in the world as long as nothing actually happens) 4 out of 5 have been shot dead. Quote The hunt for the monkeys - are still on the loose Parts of the herd at Furuvik are still on the loose – somewhere in the chimpanzee house. Now comes the zoo's next move: A drone will be sent in. - Now we are trying to get a drone into the house, says Annika Troselius, information manager. It was at lunchtime on Wednesday that five chimpanzees escaped from their enclosure inside the chimpanzee house. Four were shot dead, and the fifth is believed to have been shot. Now it remains inside the chimpanzee house, together with the three remaining chimpanzees in the herd. The outside of the chimpanzee house is still guarded "with full readiness", with the help of marksmen. The hope is that the situation will soon be under control, with the help of the drone.- In order for us to be able to get in safely, we must first locate where the chimpanzees are. The safety of our employees will always come first, but at the same time we are very keen to get a situational picture of these chimpanzees, says Annika Troselius. The killed chimpanzees could not be taken away, and remain in the park, as none are allowed to move freely in the park. One of the chimpanzees was shot as it was leaving the house, and remains there. The other two are still out in the park.- Our employees are not allowed to move outside in the park. And we have also put all our resources into working with this ongoing situation, says Annika Troselius. It is still unclear how the chimpanzees were able to escape. The zoo states that they saw no other option but to shoot the animals after they escaped.Described as the leader of the pack, Santino the chimpanzee made world news 10 years ago when researchers saw him hoarding ammunition to use against his surroundings. https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/jakten-efter-aporna-ar-fortfarande-losa/ Amazingly enough another park recently had to temporarily close down after a king Cobra escaped and was roaming around free for a week or two. Can't be long before these parks are banned for good.

sne
This one would certainly get a movie if it happened in the US of A. Quote Dolomites, plane in trouble: the 22-year-old pilot Silvia De Bon lands on the Lagorai and saves everyone Loss of power in the engine of a piper, thrilling landing at 2,100 metres: on board three young people, all from Belluno, were flying from Trento to Belluno. They reached the closest bivouac on foot and waited for help They had left Trento and were flying towards Belluno in a light aircraft , before a loss of engine power forced the three boys to make an emergency landing on the Lagorai group , in Trentino, about 100 meters below the «Paolo and Nicola» bivouac , in the municipality of Predazzo and along the slope of the Val di Fiemme, at an altitude of 2,100 metres . At the wheel of the plane was Silvia de Bon, 22 years old , on board her brother Mattia, 27 years old , and his fiancée Di lei, Giorgia Qualizza, 28. Silvia told me that the plane already had ignition problems in Trento, so she called her inspector who explained to her how she should do it». And again: «Going to high altitude, you experienced other troubles – She adds – She told me that the plane went down in a nosedive and that she saved herself by applying the rescue maneuvers. https://corrieredelveneto.corriere.it/verona/cronaca/22_dicembre_28/ultraleggero-compie-atterraggio-emergenza-lagorai-salve-tre-persone-bordo-0532785a-86da-11ed-89b1-c967f2067eee.shtml
mjmooney Posted January 16, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted January 16, 2023 Quote 'PETTY' SHEFFIELD NEIGHBOURS TREE DISAGREEMENT STILL RUMBLING ON THREE YEARS LATER, SAY WATERTHORPE LOCALS Two warring Sheffield neighbours who went viral in 2021 over a tree cut in half are still “at loggerheads”, according to locals. The Mistry and Lee families of Brier Close in Waterthorpe hit headlines when it was revealed the Lee’s had hired a tree surgeon to cut a tree near their property border directly in half. It is reported the couple had complained the tree, which is on the Mistry family’s front garden, had branches hanging over their front driveway and was attracting pigeons and causing a problem with bird mess and coo-ing noises. One local woman who wanted to remain anonymous told the MailOnline: “The tree used to be normal but then they had a disagreement. Which is why it was later cut down. I don't know what it was about, but they couldn't resolve it.” Her husband, who also did not want to be identified, added: “I think they were friendly before though.” Sheffield Star
Rodders
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-64392018 Life insurance firm DeadHappy defends Harold Shipman advert Dr Harold Shipman is one of the most prolific serial killers in modern history A life insurance firm has defended using serial killer Harold Shipman in an advert after it was labelled "beyond despicable" by other industry leaders. DeadHappy used the image to promote its services with the tagline: "Life Insurance. Because you never know who your doctor might be." The Leicester-based firm said it wanted to "make people stop and think". The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) watchdog said it was reviewing more than 50 complaints about the ad. Shipman is estimated to have murdered up to 250 people during his time as a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester. 'Shocking brand' Senior insurance advisers across the UK have slammed the advertising campaign. Kathryn Knowles, founder of Cura Financial Services, tweeted: "Please know that many of us in insurance find this beyond despicable." Others called it "shocking" and "absolutely appalling". In a statement, the firm's founder Andy Knott said: "We are called DeadHappy and our strapline is 'Life insurance to die for' so we are aware of the provocative and to some the very shocking nature of our brand. "But being provocative is different to being offensive and it is of course never our intention to offend or upset people. It is our intention to make people stop and think. If however you have been personally distressed by this advert we do sincerely apologise." Shipman was found guilty of murdering 15 patients under his care in January 2000, sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order. He was found dead in his cell in Wakefield Prison in 2004. An ASA representative said it had taken "careful note of the serious concerns being raised about this advert and we're reviewing complaints to determine whether there are grounds for further action"... Great tagline Edited January 25, 2023 by Rodders
bickster Posted January 26, 2023 Moderator Share Posted January 26, 2023 I sent that story to my daughter who works for the ASA. Her reply was along the lines of, I might get that case because I did the Fred West Fathers Day promotion one Quote [...] ITAE Productions said they did not believe the ad was offensive, adding that West was “notorious for murder, but that he was also a father, and that this was relevant to his crimes”. They said they considered it to be socially acceptable to share history that was relevant to occasions when there was a factual or direct link between the two, which in this case they believed to be Fred West’s crimes and Father’s Day. Upholding the complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) noted that advertisers “must not use a shocking claim or image merely to attract attention”. The ASA said: “We considered that conflating Fred West with the celebration of Father’s Day was intended to create shock value and contributed to the ad’s offensive nature. “We understood that the subject line of the ad, ‘she’s under the patio,’ referred to the murder of Heather West and the subsequent concealment of her body. “We considered that using the murder of a young woman, in order to shock readers into clicking on the ad, was gratuitous and likely to cause serious offence.” The ASA ruled: “We considered that the treatment of Ms West in the ad was dehumanising, especially within the context of an ad which used her murder as a tool to promote a discount code. “Furthermore, we considered the tone of the ad was flippant, and that this approach trivialised the circumstances surrounding the murder of the victims, as well as making light of distressing and serious crimes. Consequently, we considered that the ad did not treat Fred West’s victims with respect or sensitivity. “For those reasons, we concluded the ad was likely to cause unjustified distress and serious and widespread offence.” Northern Echo The Harold Shipman one will go exactly the same way. It's a bit of a slam dunk for the ASA
