Stevo985 Posted December 13, 2009 VT Supporter Share Posted December 13, 2009 After having some time to reflect I'll post my ratings Friedel: 8 - Didn't have too much to do, but his save in the 87th minute from Berbatov was superb. It was glossed over by the commentators on ESPN and MOTD but it deserves recognition. People doubt Brad's reactions these days, but that was a top top save. Young: 9 Dunne: 9.5 Cuellar: 9 Warnock: 9-------The whole defence was superb, Dunne being the marginal standout and MOTM for me Young: 9 Extra points for the assist. Dangerous all game Milner: 7.5 Worked hard as always. I'm his biggest fan but he lacked a final ball yesterday. SSecond half he gave away possession quite a lot. Petrov: 8.5 Brilliant Downing: 8 very promising Gabby: 9 Nuff said Heskey: 7 did ok. Had a couple of shots which he fluffed. Collins: 8 Did well. Some superb passes, particularly one to Heskey in the second half. NRC: 7.5 Not really on long enough but did well Carew: 7 Fairly quiet. MON: Perfect. Subbed when he needed to sub and clearly the tactics worked very well on the day. Doesn't always get things right, but yesterday he did.
briggaman
Just got back from Manchester. Cracking stuff from the entire team and to see all of the Man Utd supporters almost in tears was priceless. MON got the tactics spot on yesterday and I am absolutely over the moon with the result. Not only was it a win at Old Trafford, yet we also kept a clean sheet. My only negative would be that at times Man Utd seemed to get in behind our back four a little too easily. Although, to be honest our back four were solid. Every single one of our players deserves a large pat on the back for that result. It means a lot and hopefully we can push on from here. We all know how good we can be if the players give it their all, however the frustrating thing is that they sometimes don't against weaker teams. If the lads can get motivated for the lesser teams too then the sky really is the limit. Well done to MON and all of the players. Fantastic result and I am still floating through the air after that one. Woohoo!! UTV!
JAMAICAN-VILLAN
FERGIE'S WINGS CLIPPED BY ANGEL GABRIEL Manchester United 0 Aston Villa 1 TOO soon to talk of Premier League titles and yet the Grand Slam is on. Liverpool were picked off at Anfield and Chelsea were chased out of town as Aston Villa's season began to take shape. Yesterday, Old Trafford became the graveyard of champions. Only Arsenal to go now, all eyes on December 27 as Villa prepare to beat another member of the Established Order. Bring it on for this Villa team, having the temerity to teach Manchester United a thing or two on their own hallowed turf. This time there was no rescue act, no sign of Federico Macheda swinging a right boot from the edge of the penalty area. Instead, it was a good old-fashioned football lesson, dished out to the delight of Martin O'Neill's upwardly-mobile young team. Such belief, breathtaking at times as they brushed United aside. Stirring stuff, almost enough for Villa's 5,000 travelling supporters to start dreaming of the top four and beyond. Last April, against the same opposition, United got lucky, going on to win a third successive title after Macheda's wonder goal in the 90th minute. This time it's different. Alex Ferguson's men are still behind Chelsea after slipping to their fourth defeat of an increasingly fractured season. Doesn't life taste sweet for Villa's supporters, inching their way up the table in a series of mesmerising movements. The firebrands in their forward line settled it, with Gabriel Agbonlahor scoring the winner after trading passes with Ashley Young. United's defence struggled, unable to cope with the interchanges between Young, Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and James Milner. This could be the seminal moment in Villa's season, the time when the top four becomes more than just make-believe. It was a famous win, with O'Neill more excitable than ever on the touchline as they counted down the clock for 69 tense minutes. He was the 12th man, prowling the edge of his technical area and almost on the pitch issuing a steady stream of instructions. There was no hiding place for Villa's players, puffing out their chests as they executed their game-plan in front of their adoring fans. A late kick-off should have been United's calling, the chance to draw level with Chelsea at the top of the pile. The incentive was there to catch the men from Stamford Bridge, to climb alongside Carlo Ancelotti's stuttering outfit with another convincing win. Wayne Rooney radiated, with the ball sticking to his magic boots every time his team-mates prodded it into his path. Then it was all about the final touch, the fitting end for a player flying past Villa's defence each time he was in possession. Old Trafford was willing him on after Villa's opener, rising off their seats as one when he broke into his stride down the left flank. Past Carlos Cuellar with the first touch and then he was bounding into the area, bearing down on Villa keeper Brad Friedel. Luke Young cut across him and Rooney went down, flicking out his right leg and demanding a penalty. What a call by referee Martin Atkinson, keeping his cool to award Villa a goal-kick and a caution for Rooney. Quite right, the perfect response to the United striker's uncharacteristic behaviour. The champions were rattled, all possession and no penetration. Yet Rooney was up for the challenge, turning Cuellar inside the area and rattling an effort off Friedel's bar. He was United's best player, brilliantly chasing back in the second half to win the ball from Stiliyan Petrov. They were almost in full flow, reacting to Agbonlahor's 21st-minute strike with a predictable onslaught. United were hurting, looking for prime suspects after Agbonlahor beat Tomasz Kuszczak at his near post with a clever header. Young had only just swapped wings with Stewart Downing, sent out to the left as Villa searched for a weakness. They found it when Agbonlahor's pass fell to Young and he picked out the striker with a weighted ball into the near post. Wes Brown was ball-watching and Kuszczak was beaten, berating his defenders as Agbonlahor set off to celebrate with Young in front of the Stretford End. That was Agbonlahor's ninth goal of an increasingly impressive season, still time for him to force his way into Fabio Capello's World Cup plans. Capello is still to be convinced and yet Agbonlahor has all the attributes, the matchwinning qualities needed at a World Cup. Perhaps he could be the surprise package, a player who can make an impact with 20 minutes left in a quarter-final tie. He certainly made an impression yesterday, giving this Villa team the belief that they can finally finish in the top four. They ran out of steam last season, overhauled by Arsenal in the closing stages of a thrilling year at Villa Park. This time they have Tottenham and Manchester City for company, yet Villa are on a roll. They are on the move, recovering from their opening-day defeat against Wigan to string together an impressive sequence of results. Cuellar aside, they are a tight, attacking unit, full of willing workers moulded by their manager into a certain style. O'Neill loves his wingers, with pace on one side with Young and intuition and invention on the other with Downing. They are going places, gearing up for another journey that they hope will take them into the Champions League. That's O'Neill's target, teaching this exciting team the tricks needed to overtake the obvious threats of Arsenal and Liverpool. Young was exceptional, far happier when stationed out on the left, up against Darren Fletcher, filling in at right-back for United. Whenever he is on the ball, Villa come alive. They looked like a team ready to exploit the gaps in United's hesitant defence. Ferguson sent for reinforcements after the break, replacing Ryan Giggs with the fall-back option of Michael Owen. He was unlucky not to start, with Tuesday's hat-trick against Wolfsburg shuttling him ahead of Dimitar Berbatov in the pecking order. It never quite clicked with Rooney at international level and yet Owen's introduction signalled all-out attack from United. It had to be that way, with the hosts 45 minutes from their second defeat of the season at Old Trafford. At times it was all panic and desperation as Villa attempted to prevent United piercing through their defence. They cleared their lines and slid in for tackles while Rooney rampaged through the middle - all the clichés in evidence as the visitors closed in on victory. Rooney fired over and Bulgarian Berbatov, on as a supplementary striker for the final half-hour, had an effort deflected wide. What a chance for United, a missed opportunity in a season where their aim is to clinch a fourth successive title. That's a long way off for Villa but this is some scalp. Thought this was pretty good! http://tinyurl.com/GLORIOUS-VILLA 8)

roonst83
About **** Time. This has been way too long in the making. After havign to watch us crumble to United before, not turn up, run scared, lose bottle, see their fans run onto our pitch after coming from 2 goals down in the FA Cup - this makes up for all the heart-ache of losing to Man Utd - and to do it on their own patch makes it so much better! Milfner
I missed the last train back from Manc last night, but I'd sacrifice sleeping on a hard floor at my sisters to see 3 points at OT. We were **** superb. Everyone. Just immense. And the best thing about it, there was 3 Manure fans at the station who lived in Bromsgrove and could get back, so they had to sleep rough for the night! Victory became even sweeter, gloryhunting bastards!
