CarewsEyebrowDesigner
They were great until they got (overtly) political. Edited January 24, 2013 by CarewsEyebrowDesigner
dont_do_it_doug.
Yeah, I think I'm talking about their earlier work. Automatic for the People era.
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Murmur/Reckoning/Lifes Rich Pageant for me. I can tolerate Document but after that it got too much for my taste, minus a decent ditty now and then
TrentVilla Posted January 24, 2013 Moderator Share Posted January 24, 2013 Yeah, I think I'm talking about their earlier work. Automatic for the People era. A superb album. End of the World as we know it of Document is a great track as well.

Chindie Posted January 24, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 24, 2013 They were just a fantastic band. They suffered after Bill Berry left, a couple of albums aside, but for a very long time they're just unparalleled.
dont_do_it_doug.
I'm genuinely new to them. As in tonight! Obviously I've heard their music before. Just never really listened. They are very "ditty", perhaps this is my musical taste aging. I'll go with it...

dont_do_it_doug.
I'm a big James fan already, have been for many years. They played "sometimes" on XFM the other day and I nearly gave my work colleague a heart attack by cranking the volume up to 11 unannounced. mjmooney Posted January 25, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 25, 2013 Maybe Automatic era, but he has an REM story, IIRC. I think it was me and Bickster (?) that were there near the beginning. Can't be arsed to trot out my story again in detail, but in a nutshell - had a few beers with 'em on their first (1984) UK tour. Top lads they were, too. The only 80s band I really like - and then only up to Life's Rich Pageant. Thought they got rather dull after that, TBH.
