Not like we get earthquakes or volcanoes here, and if an asteroid or nuclear weapon is about to hit us then it won't do any good anyway. I think its more to do with eg terrorists running amock in the bar area you are currently drinking in. Gas leak/nuclear reactor meltdown, get away. Dangerous criminal spotted in your street etc.

In case you hadn’t noticed terrorists running amock in the bar you are in the text alert would advise you to move to the lounge or snug post haste, to avoid the ghastly unpleasantness.
Genie
The alert I saw when I was in the US was surprisingly not about an active shooter in the area, it was about a reported kidnapping. I’m still not sure what they expected me to do about that.

Victim as optional collateral damage at your discretion. 1
dubbs
Wierdly the alert went off on my phone at 6.28 this morning. I guess that's why they were testing the system for bugs

mjmooney Posted April 24, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted April 24, 2023 My Dad always referred to the snug, the public bar and the smoke room (what I would have called the lounge). Seemed odd to me, as there was just as much smoke (if not more) in the bar.
Tegis Posted April 24, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted April 24, 2023 The Swedish shuffle Learned something new today working for a Swedish company with a large presence in the US. The shuffle takes place at the coffee machine or water-cooler when normal friendly chit-chat happens between two people. When a third person arrives and converses with one of the participants, the Swede shuffles off without saying a word. All other nationalities (though I assume our other Nordic friends don’t get a pass here either) excuse themselves one way or another when leaving the conversation. This is apparently a well-known fact. Thinking about it, I most certainly do this

Popular Post Xann
My friends got out of Khartoum via Djibouti. On the first attempt to move through the city they were fired on and the French escort took a couple of casualties. Then French special forces got involved, everyone got to the military transport and got out, including the wounded. It seems the major nations were caught unprepared, despite warnings from those on the ground about forces on the move and supplies being stockpiled ready for conflict. The Americans and French can thank a Brit civilian for having her head screwed on at the start of hostilities, then the French stepped up and sorted their shit out. We're not covering ourselves in glory at the minute, tbh. 5

That's a whole day ahead of us There's partial mitigation in that we have a few thousand out there making the logistics more awkward, but the emergency evac systems we had in place had a gaping flaw. There was another issue I've not seen mentioned which played a part in the confusion. we'll see if that comes out in the wash?
