BOF Posted July 2, 2013 Moderator Share Posted July 2, 2013 whats wrong with scratch cards? dont get me wrong im not one of these who buys £20 worth at time (the most ive seen was £50 of one type of card) but if ive spent say £3.98 in a shop i'll more than likely buy one rather than have the changeIt would never even dawn on me to do that tbh. I've nothing against them per se. They're just not something I do.

It's the habitual buying of £5+ scratchcards that I think is ridiculous. Taking it back to my original post, my comment was aimed at my mother in law, who complains because she can't afford gym membership, but spends £5-£10 every day on scratchcards. Seems pretty silly to me.
mjmooney Posted July 2, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted July 2, 2013 Never bought one. Like BOF, it just wouldn't occur to me.
Eames
I remember when I first started going out with the now wife ...she never understood the collection of loaded and fhm mags . had to throw them all out why ? Mrs H may not understand but she wouldn't expect me to throw anything out , in the same way that neither would I of her OK I did say that if she ever made the kids dress up in traditional Hungarian folk costumes I'd divorce her on the spot but other than that it's all give and take Same here. Mrs E had a huge issue with my slightly crusty collection of FHMs.... leading to a minor tiff in my teenage bedroom. She was under the impression it was porn and she made it very clear she disapproved. I subsequently cracked open my super secret stash of Razzle magazines and educated her on what a jazz mag really was. She wasn't all that understanding for some reason........
Stevo985 Posted July 2, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted July 2, 2013 (edited) I buy scratchcards occasionally and never cashed them in, but obviously kept the winners. Found them the other day and cashed them for a cool £24. It's like a really shit savings account. Edited July 2, 2013 by Stevo985
Shillzz
I don't buy them, the odds printed on the back make it pretty clear that the more you buy, the more money you're going to lose, but I can understand those who do. I recently had an unimaginably frustrating 'conversation' at work with regards to the benefits of scratch cards. As per the law of averages, the more you play, the more you will conform to the likely odds of winning, or the average win (as game theory goes). The average win always being less than the cost of the card. The knuckleheads in work would not take this, however, and due to them outnumbering me 4/1, the argument was lost. villa4europe
yeah like i said i dont buy the big roll of the same scratch cards but i know a lot of people do in the belief that winners are printed off in batches on the same roll we do also tend to buy scratchcards if we win a tenner on the syndicate at work and i will always cash in a scratch card to buy another scratch card i dont really get the main draw on a saturday night, you obviously win more but when was the last time anyone watched it? at least with a scratch card you get that 30 second buzz
Shillzz
I love the "it says 1 in 4 is a winner, hence if I buy 4, then 1 wins" mentality. Makes me chuckle every time, I've actually witnessed a guy in work getting visibly angry having fallen foul of this.

chrisp65
anecdotal evidence on scratchcards: My brother used to work in a shop that sold scratch cards. People would come in and buy one or two. If they won, he'd know straight away as they'd turn around and get their winnings. If they hadn't come back in 5 minutes, they'd lost. So, if he sold 6 or 7 cards, and didn't have anyone returning for a tenner, he'd buy the cards up until he got that tenner. It never ever cost him ten to win ten. Given that my bro could work that out, good luck with your corner shop scratch card purchases.

It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother HoChaChu. But I think it's Colin. Thank you Tommy Cooper.

Off topic, but similar to the logic that we hear about homosexuality in football. 1 in 10 men are gay (I think that's it) therefore there MUST be a gay person in every football team. Doesn't work like that though does it? I don't think I'm being homophobic when I say that usually gay guys aren't as into sport as non gay guys, so it's logical to assume that the amount of homosexuals involved in football is much lower than your sample of average males.
BOF Posted July 2, 2013 Moderator Share Posted July 2, 2013 I'd say it's reasonable to assume the percentage to be lower than the social average. People tend to have trouble with statistics at the best of times.

Ingram85
A while ago the mother in law was showing me some pictures of a night out she had, and I asked why was Jabba the Hutt standing in the background? It was only one of her close friends Luckily she has a good sense of humour and the whole family were pissing themselves at my comment Reminds me of the time when former poster WiggyRichard was showing us his wedding photos. One particular poster made a remark about the back cleavage present on one of the Bridesmaids. Needless to say it turned out to be his sister. That would be me
