heystally!
Just wondering whether anyone buys into it as an analytical tool. My manager at work today said you're apparently not supposed to leave work clothes hanging around your room, because your mind is always aware of them, and you can never fully take your mind off of work and relax. Thought it was quite an interesting concept, since I hang my uniform on the back of my bedroom door. So opinions?
peterms
A) Yes. Your manager is a ****.
emma_villan1
I did a whole degree in Psychology! It can be used to explain everything the mind does. I'm not so sure about the work clothes thing though, but I guess if you are seeing the clothes you wear to work every time you try and relax then it will stop you relaxing. Well, I suppose if you try to relax by focusing your entire attention on a uniform hanging on a peg on your bedroom door, that might possibly interfere with your ability to relax. I suppose it depends on the uniform though, and what your idea of relaxation is.... But seriously, the idea that work clothes hanging up might prevent someone switching off from work is just silly. xliosive
Here, I refused not to vote. So I have cast my vote and hopefully land on the majority side. p.s I think I have got an AS qualification in Psycology but all I learnt was how to make dogs salivate by giving them electric shocks! Milfner
I'm thinking of taking it at Uni, and then go off towards Sports Psychology. I do see what you mean, especially all the psyco-sexual bollocks that Freud came out with is just general shit. Yes Sigmund, because i am messy means i played with my shit as a child. I think not. emma_villan1
Freud stuff is crap, other psychology isn't! Sports psychology is very interesting, as I like occupational psychology which a lot can be applied to sports as well!

chrisp65
it works for some people...therefore it works if giving people a placebo makes them think they are better to a point that they can function better than before the placebo, well happy days it's in it's early days, there's something in it, long way to go
tonyh29
So opinions? peterms summed it up perfectly in firm i worked for years back hired a theatre on The Strand and got one of those psychologist \ motivator type people in to give us all a talk me and a colleague sneaked out and went down the pub .. got a mild bollocking for it the next day but it was well worth it As with the kids thread though ..can't stand being told by others what to do ..i even told my driving instructor he was doing it wrong .. that ten and two bollocks isn't practical as any car driver will tell you :-)
YLN
I like to think that I know why I do things better than anyone else, so I wouldn't be inclined to give it any weight.
Mr_Dogg
This type of poll shouldn't really exist. Psychology is a science, it's not astrology or something.
mjmooney Posted September 23, 2009 VT Supporter Share Posted September 23, 2009 Physics. A structured discipline for analysing the processes of the universe? Or a load of incomprehensible gobbledygook? Maths. A logical tool for understanding quantities and relationships? Or a lot of meaningless squiggly symbols? Modern languages. A wide spectrum of human communications and literature? Or a load of weird babbling? History. A study of human political, military and social development over time? Or some boring stuff from the old days?

Or a load of weird babbling? History. A study of human political, military and social development over time? Or some boring stuff from the old days? Exactly, just because you may not understand it doesn't mean it can not be understood. Post World War II the 'four minute mile' was the holy grail of athletics. There was speculation about whether a person could ever run a mile in under 4 minutes. It took nearly a decade until 1954 before a guy actually managed to do the impossible and run a mile in under 4 minutes. The year after half a dozen people did it. It's these types of psychological effects that football teams pay thousands for psychologists to overcome and it is not limited to sports.
Phumfeinz
I think it's fascinating, if I could go back in time I'd choose to study psychology instead of the boring IT course I did.
